Graham says Trump isn't giving in on southern border wall

Trump's speeches have sparked protests from opponents

The House and Senate overwhelmingly passed a bill on Friday to ensure all government workers receive retroactive pay after the shutdown ends.

"What we're not looking to do right now is national emergency", Trump said.

Former White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci told the West Block's Mercedes Stephenson that the three-week shutdown is a grudge match symbolizing the bigger ideological fight between Republicans and Democrats, but warned the country will face serious economic harm if it doesn't end soon.

In past all shutdowns, both furloughed and nonfurloughed workers have gotten back pay, though federal contractors and their employees are generally left uncompensated.

One major airport, Miami International, will close an entire terminal this weekend because so many security staff have called in sick. Trump said Friday that he planned to sign a bill guaranteeing that federal employees will be given back pay once the government reopens.

Mr. Cornyn noted that in the days before the shutdown began on December 22, he and every other senator had voted for a stopgap government spending measure that omitted wall funding, believing that the president supported it, only to learn later that Mr. Trump had no intention of doing so.

Neither of the sides seem willing to budge, yet Trump is also unwilling to resort to declaring a national emergency and use the Pentagon slush fund to build the wall. Congress will return to session - and to efforts to end the shutdown - on Monday.

Trump tweeted that "to understand" his plan, "you would have to understand the fact that I won the election, and I promised safety and security for the American people". That ended when congressional Republicans agreed to a short-term funding bill for closed agencies that was later extended.

Bernie Sanders apologizes to women harassed during his campaign
Later in the night, the 50-year-old Becker grabbed the woman by the wrists and held her head while kissing her, the report said.

Trump also blasted Democrats for attending a winter retreat in Puerto Rico, where House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other lawmakers attended the opening night of Hamilton with creator and original star Lin-Manuel Miranda back in the lead.

A later tweet said damage from "Drugs, Crime and so much that is bad" were worse for the United States than the government shutdown.

And, Trump, who was holed up in the White House as snow blanketed Washington on Sunday, appeared to shoot down Graham's suggestion of a "wall plus" deal, saying on Twitter that even Democrats don't want to make "Dreamers" part of the negotiations. Milstead said a barrier of steel slats that border agents can see through and animals and waters can pass through - much like what exists at the border now - could work. "And so in order to survive, he is taking positions and doing things that you and I would think make no sense at all, and don't fit everything we know about him as a person, but it fits what he thinks he needs to do in order to survive".

Replied Hoyer, "Oh no, I think there was an election, and he did raise that question".

In his nationally televised address he delivered from the Oval Office on Tuesday, Trump asserted that there is a humanitarian and security crisis at the border because of illegal immigration.

Trump threatened anew that the shutdown could continue indefinitely. Instead, McConnell last week vowed to stand with Trump in the wall debate, after the president met with all Senate Republicans and pleaded for party unity behind his wall quest. The White House has said the president will veto the funding legislation unless his demands for a border wall are met.

In his tweets Saturday, Trump reacted sharply to a televised comment that he lacks a strategy for ending the shutdown.

Several government agencies are not receiving funding during the shutdown- including the Department of Justice (DOJ), the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the Interior Department, the Agriculture Department, the State Department, the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), and a few smaller agencies- but these agencies are providing "essential" government services despite the lack of funding.
