Mayor Bill de Blasio announces plan to protect New York City tenants

Bill de Blasio

In his State of the City address today, Mayor Bill de Blasio used the podium to sign an executive order establishing the Mayor's Office to Protect Tenants.

De Blasio's office credited the law, informally known as Obamacare, with bringing the number of uninsured Americans down to almost half of what it was in 2013.

"Health care is a right, not a privilege reserved for those who can afford it". If implemented, New York City would be the first jurisdiction in the country to mandate paid personal time for employees.

"To be the fairest big city in America, New Yorkers can't be forced to choose between bringing home a paycheck and taking time off just to disconnect or spend time with loved ones", de Blasio said.

All services will be affordable on a sliding scale.

"Here in United States, we have fewer days off than anywhere else in the world - time that increases productivity and improves mental and physical health", said Department of Consumer Affairs Commissioner Lorelei Salas.

Then on Wednesday, the Post reported, Mayor de Blasio unveiled legislation to mandate two weeks of paid time off for full-time workers in the city, a move that would guarantee paid time off for an additional 500,000 people according to estimates from the mayor's office using USA census bureau data.

Under NYC Care, as the city's program is being called, uninsured New Yorkers will be able to call a central phone number to get an insurance card and be assigned a doctor, giving them access to primary care and an array of specialty services, the mayor said according to the Post.

Councilmember Jumaane Williams said he was optimistic about de Blasio's progressive tone. "What we need now is to hold the administration to account for these bold promises and ensure that they deliver for New Yorkers", he said in a statement, adding, "What's also clear is that we need to continue a push to make sure that people and issues are not left behind". "I look forward to working with Council Speaker Corey Johnson and the rest of City Council on this important piece of legislation". "Well-connected developers should not be getting sweetheart deals on the taxpayers' dime".
