Healthcare Facility Chief Quits After Woman in Coma Gives Birth

Hacienda Health Care in Phoenix

The CEO of Hacienda Healthcare has stepped down amid an investigation into the sexual assault of a woman who gave birth while in a vegetative state.

The woman, being in a vegetative state, has no means of defending herself or even letting people know she was pregnant.

The woman had been a patient at the Phoenix facility for years after nearly drowning, according to azfamily.com, which broke the story; police declined to provide NPR with details about their investigation.

The caregiver told the outlet that the staff at the facility are pretty much the only human contact the patient has, as her family only visits once every few months.

"As a healthcare provider, we can not comment on any patient due to federal and state privacy laws". The facility has up to 74 patient beds, according to federal records, while state records show that some patients have lived at the Hacienda facility for decades. "When you have a loved one committed to palliative care, when they are most vulnerable and dependent upon others, you trust their caretakers", Chairman Terry Rambler said in a statement.

Hacienda Healthcare's longtime CEO Bill Timmons resigned on Monday following news of the birth.

The source added the patient required around-the-clock care and many would have access to her room.

CNN is not reporting the woman's name because she is the victim of sexual abuse.

She said no one reported that incident exclusively out of fear, and she believes there's been other abuse throughout the years.

Hacienda chief executive Bill Timmons has also resigned amid the scandal.

Social media was flooded with outrage over why police will not call the investigation of a woman in a vegetative state being impregnated, then giving birth a sex crime.

Protocol at the clinic has been changed, the source said, and men now have to be accompanied by a woman on entering the room of a female patient.

"We have recently become aware of a deeply disturbing incident involving the health and safety of a Hacienda resident. I was confused. I was scared", she said. "But I can't believe someone receiving that level of constant care wasn't recognized as being pregnant prior to the time she delivered".

The Arizona Department of Health Services (DHS), which licenses the facility, said they were aware of the alleged incident and were "actively working with local law enforcement in their criminal investigation".

Meanwhile, San Carlos Apache Police Department Chief Alejandro Benally said the department will assist Phoenix Police in any way possible, and the matter falls under the jurisdiction of Phoenix Police.

Sources also told ABC 15 in another report that investigators are looking into whether the patient suffered multiple sexual assaults, "including assaults on different parts of the body".
