The order was issued by Israeli minister of military affairs Avigdor Lieberman. A Palestinian succumbed to his wounds later, Gaza health officials said.

Ministry spokesman Ashraf al Qidra identified two of the slain Palestinians as Ahmed Ibrahim al Tawil, 27, and Mohamed Abdel Hafiz Ismael, 29.

They also seek the right to return to lands that Palestinians fled or were driven from upon Israel's founding in 1948.

One Israeli soldier has been killed over the same period.

"The assailants were killed", it said, without giving a number.

A source at the Nablus hospital where Aisha al-Rawbi was brought said the 47-year-old was dead on arrival and that she had suffered a head injury. He says her husband saw a small group of settlers nearby.

Israeli soldiers also shot and killed Afifi Mahmoud Afifi, 18, in eastern Gaza City, Qudra said. Between 500,000 and 600,000 Israelis live in Jewish-only settlements across occupied East Jerusalem and the West Bank in violation of worldwide law.

A wave of mainly lone-wolf Palestinian attacks against Israelis in the West Bank erupted in 2015 but had largely abated.

"Israel will not put up with the situation in which, on the one hand, fuel tank trucks can access Gaza, and on the other, terror and violence are carried out against the Army and the citizens of Israel", the statement of the Defense Ministry read.

The Israeli military said it opened fire on crowds who breached the security barrier separating Israel and the Palestinian territories and approached an army post.

According to Qidra, another 50 Palestinians were injured by live ammunition fired by Israeli troops deployed along the other side of the buffer zone.

Israeli army spokesman Jonathan Conricus said on Twitter an "organised attack" had involved around 20 Palestinians crossing the border after an explosive device destroyed a portion of the fence.
