No change in Qld after dire climate report

The Curragh open cut coal mine in Queensland

The 2015 Paris Agreement, ratified by 181 countries, aims to limit that increase to 1.5 degrees above pre-industrial levels.

IPCC's special report gives unequivocal message that the global average temperature rise has already reached 1 deg C. With the current speed of action, the additional rise of half a degree is just about 12 years away, within the lifetime of most of the humanity living today.

"Nothing suggests world will come close to meeting this goal on climate change", Richard Haass, the president of the Council on Foreign Relations, said on Twitter. While limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees C is "possible within the laws of chemistry and physics", to do so would require unprecedented changes in energy, industry, buildings, transportation, and cities. With that in mind, industrialised countries of the world must have faster and greater emission reductions, whilst providing means of implementation for developing country parties to fulfil their common responsibility.

The obvious solution is to dramatically reduce carbon emissions. There is very little time left.

Prototypes for direct carbon capture from the air already exist. Nevertheless, the use of all carbon-based fuels must be reduced and eliminated to avoid the climate catastrophe.

That's true here in New Mexico, where average annual temperatures have already increased by 2°F just since the 1970s, according to a number of sources, including a recent report from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

"Canada should take an aggressive stand", he said. No domestic mitigation measure New Zealand takes will make the slightest difference to the extent of climate change we face. I hope China will put tougher climate targets in place.

"Let's live without them, and start talking", he said. By 2050, the report calls for a total or near-total phaseout of the burning of coal. Achieving the 1.5C target would require a comprehensive transition, affecting everything. In order to skid to a halt, brakes on hard, before we hit plus-1.5C, we will have to cut our greenhouse gas emissions by nearly half (45 per cent) during the next twelve years. So while there's still hope for 1.5C, it would be hugely hard.

This week's report from global scientists was stark and urgent. Thankfully, the United Nations report suggests a first step toward redemption: Call your congressperson today and demand legislation that puts a price on carbon dioxide emissions. China will update its NDC in 2020 and will also need to submit a long-term strategy running up to 2050. Or will climate scientists remain invisible? Current annual emissions are about 42 billion tonnes, implying about a decade of pollution before "the need to go vertical" to zero emissions to keep within the temperature limit. While the size of the population makes this understandable it should be noted that China's emissions per person are now higher than those of European Union nations.

Musk also "liked" a response on Twitter that said in part: "Judge should dismiss this frivolous attack and shame the SEC". He joined the board of Tesla in 2017 acting as a non-executive but has since expressed his desire for the chairman role.

The landfall process has been completed and "the centre of eye of cyclone " Titli " lies over the land", the IMD said. The Bay of Bengal often witnesses cyclones at this time of year, with some causing widespread death and destruction.

"I am going to consider things that I think will ensure that we get electricity prices down when it comes to energy".

India is at an earlier stage of modernisation, and its per person emissions now low (about one quarter those of China), but rapid economic development, and a population almost the size of China's, will inevitably mean an increase. This is a serious concern.

CSIR research has shown how southern Africa temperatures are rising at about twice the global rate of temperature increase.

Billed in the media as "life changing", the report illustrates how crossing the ever-nearer threshold of 1.5C warming will affect the planet, and how hard it will be to avoid overshooting this target.

He acknowledged that 1.5 C will adversely affect the country's sea levels and delta in several ways, increasing drought will impact on food security. More recently, he claimed that low temperatures disprove climate change.

- Half as many animals with back bones and plants would lose the majority of their habitats.

"Limiting global warming to 1.5°C compared with 2°C would reduce challenging impacts on ecosystems, human health and well-being, making it easier to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals", said Priyardarshi Shukla, Co-Chair of IPCC Working Group III.

At the same time, highly exposed countries such as Namibia and Botswana need to anticipate and plan for quite rapid changes in local weather and climate.
