Soyuz MS-10: Russian spacecraft makes emergency landing on Earth

Two astronauts make emergency landing after Russian rocket malfunctions during lift-off

They will be transported to the Gargarin Cosmonaut Center in Star City, Russia outside Moscow. One of the pictures showed Hague smiling and another had him sitting next to Russia's space agency chief Dmitry Rogozin. "I strongly believe we're going to get the right answer to what caused the hole on the International Space Station and that together we'll be able to continue our strong collaboration", Bridenstine said, as reported by the Associated Press.

A tweet from Roscosmos shows the two astronauts resting comfortably, and looking like they're in good spirits, despite what must have been a hard experience. That triggered a warning light to turn on inside the crew capsule, NASA astronaut Reid Wiseman said during a news conference held today. Popular Mechanics describes ballistic re-entry as "steep and short" compared to the long, flat profile of a "controlled descent".

Oleg Orlov, the head of Russia's main space medicine centre, said the crew was trained to endure higher-than-usual gravity loads and were tightly strapped into their custom-made seats to help withstand the pressure.

NASA says two astronauts from the USA and Russian Federation will be flown to Moscow after they made an emergency landing.

What happens next: NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine tweeted a statement in which he confirmed that the crew was safe and that NASA was monitoring the situation carefully.

Until the investigations are completed, there will be no official information about what caused the rocket's failure to carry the crew to orbit.

Hague and his fellow astronaut, Russian Alexei Ovchinin, are safe after an emergency landing early Thursday morning, following the failure of a Russian booster rocket carrying them to the International Space Station.

"An accident with the booster, two minutes, 45 seconds", the voice of Ovchinin could be heard saying calmly in live-streamed footage of the launch from Kazakhstan's Baikonur cosmodrome.

He said all manned launches will be suspended pending an investigation into the cause of the failure. The spacecraft has been the sole means of bringing humans to the space station since the end of the U.S. Space Shuttle program, but commercial providers aiming for manned spaceflight are increasingly nipping at Russia's heels. Russian news reports indicated that one of its four first-stage engines might have failed to jettison in sync with others, resulting in the second stage's shutdown and activating the automatic emergency rescue system. The occupants of the capsule located at the tip of the rocket were scheduled to undertake a six-hour journey to the International Space Station (ISS), where they would meet Expedition 57 crewmates Alexander Gerst, Serena M. Auñón-Chancellor, and Sergey Valerievich.

A rescue mission was launched immediately, Nasa and the Russian Roscosmos space agency said.

Rescue crews then raced to the scene to retrieve them, including paratroopers parachuting to their landing spot, helicopters and all-terrain vehicles, NASA said.

- NASA says an astronaut and a Russian cosmonaut are in good condition after an emergency landing following a booster rocket failure minutes after the launch.

NASA astronaut Nick Hague and Russian cosmonaut Alexey Ovchinin launched from the Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan at 7:40PM AEDT last night.

Nevertheless, officials in both countries continue to refer to space flight as a rare example of U.S. The mission would have been Hague's first space flight.

The International Space Station - a rare point of cooperation between Moscow and Washington - has been orbiting the Earth since 1998.
