Hunt on as Tanzanian billionaire Mohamed Dewji abducted in Dar

Reports reaching Pulselive.co.ke indicate that the Tanzanian businessman was kidnapped on Thursday morning as he walked into a gym.

"Also in the report, the Dar es Salaam police chief, Lazaro Mambosasa, at a press conferences said the kidnappers had "shot into the air" before bundling Mr Dewji into a vehicle".

An Uber driver who was dropping a passenger at the hotel at the time of the abduction described events to Tanzania's The Citizen...

Adding to the confusion, the city's police chief, Lazaro Mambosasa, was widely reported as saying that Mr Dewji had been rescued, only to retract the claim later, saying he was misquoted.

Dewji, 43, was elected to parliament on the CCM ticket but did not seek re-election for his seat in the 2015 election.

According to Mambosasa, three people have been arrested for questioning in connection to the incident.

Mr Dewji, a fitness enthusiast, had no security guards with him and had driven to the gym on his own, Dar es Salaam regional police commissioner Paul Makonda told reporters.

Mr Dewji, locally known as Mo, is credited with turning his family business from a wholesale and retail enterprise into a pan-African conglomerate, reports the BBC's Athuman Mtulya from Dar es Salaam.
