Fearing for journalist Khashoggi's safety, senators trigger disappearance probe

Iran Looks to Russia to Help Bail Out Its Economy amid U.S. Sanctions

Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) told reporters Wednesday that the Senate would "take some action" regarding the disappearance of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, Politico reported. "We are going to take a very serious look". "It's a bad thing".

"We can not let this happen - to reporters, to anybody", he added during the Oval Office meeting with the Secretary of Homeland Security and Federal Emergency Management Agency administrator.

Standing in the shadow of heavily armed police outside the Saudi embassy in London, activists and journalists demanded answers from Saudi Arabia over the disappearance of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

On Wednesday, the Post published a column by Khashoggi's fiancee, Hatice Cengiz. Turkish officials fear the team killed Khashoggi, who wrote critically of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, described to the Times a quick and complex operation in which Khashoggi was killed within two hours of his arrival at the consulate by a team of Saudi agents who dismembered his body with a bone saw they brought for the goal.

When I asked him why he made a decision to live in the United States, he said America was the world's most powerful country, where one could feel the political pulse of the planet.

U.S. Vice President Mike Pence said on Wednesday the United States was ready to help in any way in the investigation. He went into self-imposed exile in Washington DC, while also maintaining a base in Turkey.

Once Mr. Trump has determined "whether a foreign person is responsible for an extrajudicial killing, torture, or other gross violation of internationally recognized human rights against an individual exercising freedom of expression", according to the letter, he must report to the committee within 120 days with a decision on the imposition of retaliatory sanctions. The source confirms that Salah Muhammed al Tubaigy heads a "Forensic Evidence Unit" in Saudi Arabia's "General Security Directorate". "I think we'll get to the bottom of it", he added.

Turkey has focused much of its investigation on 15 Saudi nationals who arrived in Istanbul on two flights the same day as Khashoggi was at the consulate.

Turkish media outlets have published CCTV images which they say show the Saudi intelligence officers allegedly behind the disappearance of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi. Khashoggi has been a contributing writer for the Post.

The case surrounding Jamal Khashoggi, the missing Washington Post columnist who disappeared after entering a Saudi consulate in Istanbul, raised more concerns after mounting evidence suggested he was murdered.

She called on Trump to "help shed light" on the journalist's disappearance.

The Foreign Relations panel was weighing possible steps Congress could take toward Saudi Arabia, she told MSNBC.

Aksam newspaper also published blurred photos of a jet arriving in Istanbul before dawn on October 2, carrying what it said were nine members of the Saudi team, as well as images of some of them checking in at a hotel.

"It points to the idea that whatever has happened to him, the Saudis - I mean, they've got some explaining to do", Corker said in a Daily Beast report.

Almost two hours later, the video shows two vehicles with diplomatic plates -a luxury black sedan and a black Mercedes VITO van- leave through the police barricades outside the consulate. A video caption says seven other men checked in at another nearby hotel at different times. "Silence, denials and delays are not acceptable", Ryan wrote in a statement. "We are demanding everything".

Saudi officials deny the allegation, claiming he left the premises - although they have yet to provide proof.
