Turkey asks to search Saudi consulate in missing journalist case

In rebuttal to Trump, bin Salman says Saudi won't pay US for kingdom's security

"We have to get an outcome from this investigation as soon as possible. The consulate officials can not save themselves by simply saying "he has left", Erdogan told a news conference in Budapest, where he is on an official visit. "You need to prove it".

Erdoğan also said that there are some 3.5 million Syrian migrants in Turkey; some 250,000 have returned to Jarabulus, Afrin, and Al-Bab, and more than 60,000 to Idlib.

Turkey has yet to make any evidence public. His friends, and Turkish officials, say he never emerged from the building.

The source said Turkish officials were trying to identify them.

On Oct. 8, Turkey also asked for permission to search the Saudi Arabian consulate. RSF wrote that a series of cables between Saudi embassies and the Saudi foreign ministry (made public by WikiLeaks) revealed that "extraordinary initiatives" were considered by Riyadh in an attempt to rehabilitate its global image. Khashoggi is a critic of the Saudi regime.

Saudi Arabia is one of the United States' most important allies in the Middle East. Saudi Arabia is also a tyrannical monarchy that punishes dissent, oppresses its own people, and has supported the spread of an intolerant form of Islam worldwide.

"If the reports of his murder prove true, grief must be accompanied by accountability for those who carried out the murder and those who ordered it".

In his newspaper columns, Khashoggi has been critical of some policies of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Riyadh's intervention in the war in Yemen.

The prince took to his Twitter to express his concern about the disappearance of the Washington Post opinion writer.

But now the veteran Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi is missing, and the tightrope is beginning to shake again.

"If Khashoggi was indeed murdered inside a diplomatic facility, it is an act of terror that echoes Russian and Chinese tactics of extraterritorial, extrajudicial attacks on dissidents, meant to intimidate any who would speak out against the Saudi government, no matter where they may be, and giving the lie to official narratives of 'reform" in Saudi Arabia, ' said Summer Lopez, PEN America's senior director of free expression programs.

Among the protesters was Tawakkol Karman, the Yemeni journalist and 2011 Nobel Peace Prize victor.

"God willing, we will not be faced with an undesirable situation", Erdoğan said, calling Khashoggi "a journalist and a friend".

Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman has brushed off comments from US President Donald Trump that Washington is "subsidising" the kingdom's military, Bloomberg reported Friday.

"It's very, very sad for us that this happened in our country", the Turkish president said.

A top Senate ally of President Donald Trump warned October 8 of a "devastating" impact on the USA alliance with Saudi Arabia if allegations are confirmed that the kingdom killed Khashoggi.

Republican Senator Lindsey Graham said Riyadh must provide "honest answers" to the claims that he was murdered.

In marked contrast, Bob Corker, the Republican chair of the Senate foreign relations committee, issued a strongly worded statement.

"We agree if there was any truth to the allegations of wrongdoing by the Saudi government it would be devastating to the U.S. -Saudi relationship and there will be a heavy price to be paid - economically and otherwise", Graham tweeted.

Mr Khashoggi reportedly left his phone with her - plus instructions to call a member of Turkey's governing party if he failed to return.
