Trump hosts Kavanaugh for ceremonial Supreme Court swearing

Analysis: Kavanaugh fight sharpens the stakes for midterms

"The way they really tortured him and his family, I thought it was a disgrace", Trump said on Monday, US east coast time.

If there had been higher Democratic turnout in the 2010 and 2014 midterms, Kavanaugh could not have made it to the Supreme Court. Ford said she was "100 per cent" certain that Kavanaugh was her attacker; Kavanaugh steadfastly denied her allegations. And since that is unlikely to come during the election, the best advice I can give my fellow Democrats is to just put impeachment - in all forms, whether it be presidential or judicial - aside.

Other GOP leaders, including Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, have been insisting that the fight over Kavanaugh has energized the Republican base.

Kavanaugh was officially sworn in Saturday evening as the 114th Justice of the Supreme Court by Chief Justice John Roberts who administered the Constitutional Oath in the Justices' Conference Room, hours after the 53-year-old judge was confirmed by a bitterly divided Senate by 50-48 votes - the closest nomination vote since 1881.

"All these angry people out there, they know that it is the people who are sitting in the Senate that they've elected who are making these decisions and they're going to go to the polls and they're going to vote differently", warned Sen. "I think you're going to see a lot of things happening on November 6 that wouldn't have".

Kavanaugh's first cases will be mostly technical, but later this term he'll hear a case that could affect criminal investigations of people tied to Trump. "So I think even before you start focusing on questions about his truthfulness before a Senate committee, you've got to focus on the urgency of the work over the next 30 days, and that's where my focus is", Booker said. Democratic lawmakers, like Booker, are hoping to channel that anger into votes.

Enter Kavanaugh, the appellate court judge accused by Christine Blasey Ford in emotional sworn testimony of sexually assaulting her in the 1980s, while the two were in high school.

"Let's speak the truth - that it was a denial of justice for the women of this country and sexual assault survivors, men, and women", Sen.

Collins ignored the rather pertinent point that this history of betrayals of the anti-abortion cause by certain Republican-appointed Justices is precisely why Donald Trump was forced to make his unprecedented, specific pledge about the reproductive rights positions of future Supreme Court nominees. "A total coward." The Arizona Republican, who is retiring, voted for Kavanaugh. "This docket is like having a left-handed pitcher throw to a righty batter, it is maximizing the likelihood that Kavanaugh's vote will be determinative".

Trump has a busy campaign schedule to spread the word that the allegations against Kavanaugh were a "hoax that was set up by the Democrats" at what he's called a risky time for men who can be falsely accused.

Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh testifies before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Capitol Hill in Washington, Thursday, Sept. 27, 2018.

She said she doesn't believe the Kavanaugh story is over. Many hugged or greeted Collins, who passed on running for ME governor this year to remain in the Senate.
