Kavanaugh gets the votes to survive Supreme Court fight

Democrats and demonstrators vented rage and resistance but the Senate rolled toward approving Brett Kavanaugh's Supreme Court nomination Saturday as President Donald Trump and Republicans approached an election-season triumph in the most electrifying confirmation battle in years. That balanced out the absence without affecting the outcome, and gave Kavanaugh the same two-vote margin he'd have received had both lawmakers voted. Steve Daines, R-Mont., who is attending his daughter's wedding in Montana. And that report might give her an excuse to vote for Kavanaugh. Kavanaugh has denied the accusations.

Two women have now accused Mr Kavanaugh of sexual assault when he younger.

The Senate voted Friday to end debate on Kavanaugh's nomination, setting the stage for a final vote in the chamber Saturday evening.

A liberal group which raises money for Democratic candidates, Priorities USA, immediately said it would not be giving any funds to his re-election campaign. "I will vote to confirm Judge Kavanaugh". In addition, Republican Senator Jeff Flake has also indicated he is a yes vote. It was only after reporters ambushed him as he was trying to get into a vehicle at the Capitol that he said he planned to vote yes "unless something big changed". Both he and Collins attempted to express a belief that Dr. Blasey Ford was assaulted, but not by Kavanaugh.

An appellate court judge on the District of Columbia circuit for the past 12 years, he pushed for the Senate vote as hard as Republican leaders - not just to reach this capstone of his legal career, but in fighting to clear his name.

For days, protesters had targeted the office of Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., responded to one protester's call for Kavanaugh to take a polygraph test, asking: "Maybe we can dunk him in water and see if he floats?"

Two key Republican senators said they were satisfied with the FBI's background investigation report on October 4, and said it didn't corroborate the claims of the women accusing Kavanaugh of misconduct.

Sen. Charles E. Grassley (R-Iowa) told reporters that the Senate Judiciary Committee's inability to attract Republican women might be caused by its heavy workload, a remark the panel's chairman tried to retract a few minutes later. He also blasted Democrats for their treatment of Kavanaugh, describing it as "nothing short of monstrous".

Sen. John Cornyn of Texas said, "The Senate has been an embarrassment".

"If young boys behave well and with respect, they have nothing to worry about", Grossi said.

They protested after an Federal Bureau of Investigation report which Republicans say exonerates him of sexual assault claims, with Democrats complaining it is too limited. Republicans have 51 seats in the Senate, which is enough to get Kavanaugh through, but not if more than one Senator vote against him.

"It is when passions are most inflamed that fairness is most in jeopardy", she said.

Furthermore, she tore into allegations from Julie Swetnick - represented by Resistance TV lawyer Michael Avenatti - that Kavanaugh had drugged and facilitated the gang raping of several women.

"I was very emotional last Thursday, more so than I have ever been".

Reaction against Collins's decision to support Kavanaugh was swift.

"I think Flake took a lot of heat, but he's a human being and most human beings were affected by those hearings", Rose said.
