End divisions or put Brexit at risk, Theresa May tells party

‘Dancing Theresa May’ urges unity for Brexit talks

On the eve of her speech, Boris Johnson infuriated the prime minister with a cultivated media scrum and then delighting his supporters with a speech in which he set out his personal Tory leadership manifesto and savaged her Chequers plan.

But did it succeed? But as she emerged to the strains of her favourite song, Abba's Dancing Queen, she looked like she was having the time of her life.

She did not use the word "Chequers" - the name of her country residence where the plan was agreed by Cabinet in July - but aides insisted that this was not meant to signal any shift away from her blueprint.

The driving message of the speech was unity.

At one point she was talking about the hard choices that had been made by the Tory governments and suffered by many people since the credit crunch.

"Today, after my long discussion with my guest, the Taoiseach, I want to say that the European Union is united behind Ireland and the need to preserve the Northern Ireland peace process", Tusk said.

In a pitch for voters in the centre ground turned off by Corbyn's leadership and the protracted rows over anti-Semitism, she said she wanted the "decent, moderate and patriotic" Conservatives to be "a party for the whole country". Would Jim Callaghan... ask the Russian government to confirm the findings of our own intelligence department?

"Would Clement Attlee, Churchill's trusted deputy during the Second World War, have told British Jews they didn't know the meaning of antisemitism?" "But my job as prime minister is to do what I believe to be in the national interest". "According to May, he dismissed the true causes of the Russian-ordered poisoning of Sergei Skripal on British soil, and his flagship policy of putting workers on boards of all big companies is a 'giant stealth tax on enterprise".

Seven US police shot in deadly stand-off
Frederick Hopkins is now still at the hospital, and reportedly has a head injury and isn't able to speak to officers. He did not say why he wasn't using state police like most law enforcement agencies do in officer shootings in SC .

Though Labour MP Angela Rayner described the dance with the hashtag cringe, Scottish National Party MP Joanna Cherry said May's dance was "an affront to my favorite song".

"What we are proposing is very challenging for the EU", May told the Tories assembled in Birmingham, U.K.

The Prime Minister is facing a race against time to get a deal thrashed out amid a Tory backbench mutiny and European Union opposition to her Chequers Brexit plan. Instead choosing to focus on the Conservative domestic record in government, the speech was light on policy and announcements, announcing only a freeze in fuel duty, extra money for cancer treatment and extra borrowing for housebuilding.

Pro-exit legislator James Duddridge on Wednesday called the negotiations "an absolute disaster" and said he had added his name to a list of Conservative lawmakers demanding a confidence vote in the prime minister. After a disastrous showing in snap elections a year ago, her ruling government depends on support from the Democratic Unionist Party in Northern Ireland.

United Kingdom correspondent Rod Liddle told Mike Hosking Theresa May has most of her Cabinet and Conservative Party behind her.

May took on her detractors in a punchy address to the party's annual conference, a day after a rival, former Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, challenged her authority with a speech of his own.

"Our mission as Conservatives must be to show them that we can build an economy that does".

Another part of May's quest to show we're all in this together, was to become relevant to the masses: there was a dirty joke about there being a "four letter word...ending in k" that the Conservatives want to do to businesses, and that's "back" them. "Don't let anyone tell you we don't have what it takes", she said. It was a self-deprecating dig at the ribbing she got for her robotic dancing during a visit to Africa.
