Emergency alert test going out to phones nationwide Wednesday

Most US cell phones to receive 'Presidential Alert' text on Wednesday

It was part of the first-ever national test of the Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA) system, part of a pair of tests delivered by FEMA, that's been buzzing phones on a regional basis for years, alerting customers mostly to severe weather and Amber alerts.

The tone sounded at 2:18 p.m. EDT. "No action is needed", the message states. Some people may get the alert a bit later depending on cell phone tower issues.

The system was put in place during President Barack Obama's tenure to alert people of a dire threat, but it didn't get its first test until TODAY.

All freaking out aside, the wireless alert system actually launched in 2012 when Barack Obama was president, so it's been around for a while.

The tests were originally set to take place September 20, but the situation with Hurricane Florence in the southeastern United States caused the tests to be delayed until Wednesday.

"You would not have a situation where any sitting president would wake up one morning and attempt to send a particular message", a FEMA official told the news network.

FEMA invites the public to send comments on the nationwide EAS-WEA test to FEMA-National-Test@fema.dhs.gov.

FEMA officials said they would share test result data on how the testing went with mobile carriers to help ensure the system works well in a true emergency.

Has an alert like this been sent out before?

Then who pushes the button?

FEMA officials have said the Hawaii incident played no role in the scheduling of Wednesday's test.

News of the alert prompted many to wonder if President Trump can text them directly and if he even wrote the alert himself.

Some users expressed relief that they did not receive an alert to their mobile device, while some voiced concern that they might not be alerted in the case of a real emergency.

This alert could be used in the event of a major solar or magnetic event, or other national emergencies, Bruner said.

What about the other screens in my life?

If you get the message, that means everything is as it should be! But those emergency weather alerts and AMBER alerts can only be sent on a regional or statewide basis, not nationally and all at once. It was completed in co-ordination with the Federal Communications Commission. The message will pop up as an alert saying "This is a test of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System. No action is required".
