Democrats make final attempt to block Kavanaugh confirmation

Both of New Hampshire's Democratic U.S. senators have announced their opposition to Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.

It prompted some of Kavanaugh's only personal remarks on the issue. And Kavanaugh said essentially to the author that that was an overstatement.

"Sometimes you just have to make a stand", said Brian Fallon, a former top adviser to Hillary Clinton and the Senate's top Democrat, New York's Chuck Schumer.

Republicans have complained that Harris and Booker are posturing with 2020 in mind.

Many women are deeply concerned about Kavanaugh's views on reproductive rights, an issue of extreme importance to them.

She is referring to Fred Guttenberg, who tried to shake hands with Kavanaugh earlier in the week.

Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin of IL put the focus on Trump, who Durbin said, "has shown contempt for the federal judiciary and has shown disrespect for the rule of law over and over again".

Senate Democrats worked into the night in a last attempt to paint Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh as a foe of abortion rights and a likely defender of President Donald Trump.

The former San Francisco mayor may not produce the red meat the progressive wing of the Democratic Party is demanding right now, but that has proven to be one of her strengths as a politician in almost three decades in Washington.

Shaheen said Monday that Kavanaugh is out of step on the scope of a president's executive power, women's right to abortions, and pre-existing conditions under the Affordable Care Act. They pointed to emails each sent to supporters this week asking for signatures opposing Kavanaugh - a common tactic to build email lists that can later be used for fundraising and organizing.

"I think he made a very compelling case that he is one of the most qualified nominees, if not the most qualified, that we've seen for the Supreme Court of the United States, and I think I've seen 15 of them", said Republican Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, who oversaw the hearing and has served in the Senate since 1981.

Abortion was a focus throughout Kavanaugh's two days of testimony. And part of that is giving a thumbs-up or thumbs-down on those precedents that could be involved in that. She was anti-Communist to say the least.

Woods took away any suspense of getting back to the Tour Championship for the first time since 2013. Rose trails Bryson DeChambeau , who won the first two playoff events, in the FedEx Cup standings.

The hearing pivoted during the day to Roe v. Wade, the high court's landmark abortion case. Kagan, incidentally, was the dean at Harvard Law School who hired Kavanaugh to teach there.

"I am not sure that all legal scholars refer to Roe as the settled law of the land at the Supreme Court level since Court can always overrule its precedent, and three current Justices on the Court would do so", Kavanaugh wrote, referring to justices at the time, in an email to a Republican Senate aide. Trump appointed Associate Justice Neil Gorsuch a year ago.

Later the same day, Clinton seized the chance to go after Petraeus in a hearing of the Senate Armed Services Committee - and to try to ease suspicions among Democratic primary voters over her vote in 2002 to authorize the war.

In the same hearing, Republican presidential contender Sen.

The opening of the Kavanaugh hearing was a circus.

Football, baseball, basketball, hockey and lacrosse all got mentions from the sports-crazed Kavanaugh, who even identified the seats he and his father had at professional football games in Washington.

"His past rulings, writings, and evasive answers before the Judiciary Committee lead to the inescapable conclusion that, as a Supreme Court justice, Judge Kavanaugh would seek to undermine and eventually overturn Roe v. Wade, and would fail to protect people with pre-existing conditions from discrimination by insurance companies".

But the sports references didn't stop there. With his questioning over, he seemed on his way to becoming the court's 114th justice.

TOTENBERG: Well, the first is the whole discussion of presidential power that came up repeatedly, the concern about abuse of presidential power and of course, in that context, President Trump's legal troubles.

"I think you're thinking of someone and you don't want to tell us", she shot back.

Kavanaugh replied: "I can't give you an answer on that hypothetical question".
