Progressive groups ratcheting up pressure on Collins ahead of Kavanaugh vote

But because these two senators are Republicans, activists are anxious that they will vote with their party to confirm Kavanaugh.

Maine Senator Susan Collins will play a pivotal role in the upcoming vote on whether to consent to Donald Trump's nominated candidate.

And activists have pledged to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to fund an opponent to Collins if she votes in favor of the president's nomination. The former gave her a 90% rating in 2014, while the latter defended Collins for standing with Planned Parenthood and with women "when it mattered most".

If approved by the Republican-led committee, Kavanaugh's nomination would go to the full Senate, where Republicans will hold a slim 51-49 majority. She said they noticed that staffers who were fielding calls about Kavanaugh were telling callers that they were taking down the message and passing it along to the senator without actually writing anything down or typing into the computer.

Collins has praised Kavanaugh for his qualifications and said she was encouraged that Kavanaugh considered Roe v. Wade "settled law" and "precedent upon precedent".

"Some of my friends have seen them being paid", said Sheets.

The ideological tilt of the Supreme Court hangs in the balance, as the Court is now split 4-4 between liberal and conservative justices.

Fears that Kavanaugh, if confirmed to the court by the Senate, could open the door to scaling back abortion access, were a key focus at the hearing.

Trump dismisses Woodward book as a ‘joke’

Far-right tipped to win big as Swedes vote
Lofven accused some of his opponents of being prepared to work with the far-right party, which he vowed his party would not to. Lengthy negotiations will be needed to build a majority, or at least a minority that won't be toppled by the opposite side.

Friday, the Senate Judiciary Committee wrapped up four days of hearings on the Supreme Court nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh.

Democratic Senator Cory Booker focused on an email he said described Kavanaugh's views as a Bush White House aide on the use of "racial profiling" in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001, attacks on the United States by the al Qaeda Islamist militant group. The two also worked together to screen applicants who wanted to clerk for Justice Anthony Kennedy, whom Kavanaugh clerked for and whom he would replace. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska probably would have to both vote "no" for Kavanaugh to be blocked. On Roe v. Wade, Kavanaugh came as close as he could - without making any clear commitments - to saying he would not be the decisive vote to overturn the precedent, stressing that the court not only established a right to abortion but also repeatedly reaffirmed it.

Booker meanwhile, dramatically challenged Republicans to expel him from the Senate, after they took umbrage over his release of "Committee Confidential" documents from Kavanaugh's time in the White House during the administration of George W. Bush.

Hence the coathangers, which symbolize back-alley abortions Americans will turn to if the Supreme Court rules that states can ban abortion completely.

If Collins votes yes, then he is likely confirmed. He said he offered the comments because he's "always concerned with accuracy". There's no point in adhering to arcane Senate rules if the GOP is going to trample all over them to begin with.

Another television and online ad campaign, by liberal group Demand Justice, highlights Roe v. Wade and Collins.

"I hope that the senator will reconsider his decision because no senator deserves to sit on this committee or serve in the Senate, in my view, if [they] decide to be a law unto themselves and willingly throws out the rules of the Senate and the determination of confidentiality and classification", said Cornyn.

Collins insists she's still deciding.
