CBS CEO Les Moonves to step down amid sexual misconduct allegations

Leslie Moonves has been the chairman and CEO of CBS Corporation but has now resigned just hours after more sexual

Chief Executive Leslie Moonves is expected to resign Monday without a severance package, according to a report in the Los Angeles Times that comes hours after the New Yorker said six additional women raised assault and harassment claims against Moonves.

As part of a settlement approved by the CBS Board of Directors, $20 million will be deducted from Moonves' severance pay and donated to "organizations that support the #MeToo movement and equality for women in the workplace", a company statement said. Negotiations between Moonves and CBS have been reportedly going on "for some time", and he's now being offered an exit package largely made up of company stock said to be worth between $100 million and $125 million.

Moonves departs immediately. Joseph Ianniello, the company's chief operating officer and a longtime acolyte of Moonves, has been named interim CEO while the board conducts a search for a permanent replacement.

Farrow's follow-up article on Sunday contained allegations from six more women, who said they Moonves harassed or assaulted them between 1980 and the early 2000s. She said he then began to retaliate against her on the job.

Six more women have made bone-chilling allegations of abuse, harassment and retaliation against Les Moonves.

The latest allegations were not addressed in CBS' announcement of Moonves' exit. Additionally, five members of the board will be replaced with new directors. The new report brings the total number of women who have accused Moonves to 12.

Moonves and Redstone were locked in a tug of war even before July 27, when Ronan Farrow first reported on alleged harassment by Moonves.

In addition to the Moonves departure, CBS announced Sunday a resolution of that dispute, which includes an agreement that the stockholder, National Amusements, won't propose a merger for at least two years.

In a letter to the New Yorker, Moonves called the accusations untrue and claimed three of the encounters were consensual, though he didn't specify which. The group said the CBS board has a responsibility to rid the company of a toxic culture toward women.

Moonves, 68, has run CBS since 2006 and his exit marks a dramatic fall by one by the most powerful executives in Hollywood.

"A $20 million donation is a first step in acknowledging that you have a problem", Time's Up said in a statement directed at CBS after Moonves' departure.

Last week, The Huffington Post's Yashar Ali reported that, after the Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake incident during the Super Bowl that aired on CBS, Moonves "was furious that Jackson didn't make a similarly contrite apology to him" and she became the "target of Moonves' ire and vengefulness", including ordering MTV, VH1, and CBS-owned radio to stop playing her music. Despite the charges, Moonves remained in charge while CBS, where he's been for 23 years, launched an in-house investigation.

Moonves has denied the allegations against him.

One of Moonves' accusers, Phyllis Golden-Gottlieb, also reported her accusations to Los Angeles police past year, but they weren't pursued because the statute of limitations had expired.

He said on CNN that "these women are coming out now" because "they have been extraordinarily frustrated by what they perceive to be inaction on the part of CBS and its board".
