Trump ready to set tariffs on all goods from China

US President Donald Trump said he's ready to impose tariffs on an additional $267 billion in Chinese goods on short notice, on top of a proposed $200 billion that his administration is putting the final touches on. "To a certain extent it's going to be up to China", Trump was quoted as saying.

Bloomberg News reported Friday that administration officials are discussing using an executive order that authorizes US officials to impose the sanctions on those taking part in "malicious cyber-enabled activities".

Trump has already imposed 25 percent tariffs on $50 billion worth of Chinese goods, mostly industrial machinery and intermediate electronics parts, including semiconductors.

His comments came as Apple warned that products made in China including the Apple Watch and Air Pods headphones would cost more if Donald Trump goes ahead with the $200bn tariffs.

Many American companies that rely on targeted Chinese imports are bracing for the next round of tariffs to hit, with some wondering whether they can absorb the higher costs or instead will need to pass them along to their customers - or find alternatives suppliers outside China.

The implementation of tariffs on $200 billion of products from China "will take place very soon depending on what happens", Trump told reporters on Air Force One on Friday. An announcement on the tariffs is expected as early as Friday.

The prime minister also said he has no plans to meet with Trump directly in Washington while NAFTA talks continue. Congress must approve any rewrite of the deal and could refuse to endorse an agreement that excludes Canada.

The US Trade Representative's office received almost 6,000 comments and held seven days of public hearings on the proposed levies. Comparatively few applauded the tariffs.

Companies such as Cisco and Hewlett-Packard say tariffs on Chinese networking equipment will ultimately make it more expensive for American consumers to access the Internet.

White House Economic advisor Larry Kudlow told CNBC that talks between the USA and China were ongoing.

"If the U.S. dogmatically implements any new tariff measures against China, China will have to take the necessary countermeasures", commerce spokesman Gao Feng told reporters. Those talks will continue to go on.

Levying duties on all Chinese purchases would hit "every aspect of our American lifestyle - so the clothes that we put on our back, the food that we eat, the cars that we drive, theshoes that we wear", Hun Quach, vice president of global trade for the Retail Industry Leaders Association, said by phone.

Specifically, Kudlow said, the United States was seeking "zero tariffs, zero non-tariff barriers, zero subsidies, stop the IP theft, stop the technology transfer, allow Americans to own their own companies". "However, hope springs eternal".
