Woods off to hot start at BMW Championship

Tiger Woods has sent fans into a frenzy during the opening round of the BMW Championship, blitzing his way into a share of the lead with fellow superstar Rory McIlroy at Philadelphia's Aronimink Golf Club.

Woods had struggled on Thursdays at events this year - in 14 tournaments, he was an aggregate two over for the first round and 66 under for the other 54 holes - but he put that right in some style with his course record-equalling score. He came to the 18th hole looking up at Woods on the leaderboard, but vaulted into first place by reeling off six consecutive birdies to get to 9-under for the tournament.

Another birdie at the first hole, his 10th, took Woods to seven under. He managed to hit 14 of 18 greens in regulation, but Woods had a more hard time getting approaches close to the hole than he did Thursday.

It was the low round of the season for Woods, two shots under his closing 64 at last month's PGA Championship, and his lowest round in any PGA event since a 61 in the second round of the 2013 WGC Bridgestone Invitational - his most recent triumph.

They had a one-shot lead over Xander Schauffele.

Woods hit nothing longer than a 9-iron into the par 4s. After a disappointing finish on Monday at the Dell Technologies Championship - he played his last five holes in 3 over par - Woods played nine holes at Aronimink on Tuesday, then opted out of the pro-am Wednesday.

Woods couldn't get a pair of decent birdie looks to drop at Nos. "Disappointed I didn't play in the pro-am but also it was the best thing for me".

McIlroy pared his 15th but three-putted for bogey both his seventh and eighth holes before a consolation birdie at the last.

But Woods made amends with a closing birdie at the par-five ninth, where he sank a seven-foot putt.

Woods hit his tee shot at the par-3 17th in a bunker, blasted out to 8 feet, and his par effort horseshoed out.

Instead, he missed the fairway on his next two tee shots, took bogey from about the same spot Woods was on No. 8, and those hopes were gone. "I putted well. Basically did everything well and looking forward to getting back out there early in the morning and trying to get it going again".
