British Airways investigating data breach from 380000 card payments

British Airways breach sees hackers take-off with customers' payment details

"The personal and financial details of customers making bookings on ba.com and the airline's mobile app were compromised".

British Airways CEO Alex Cruz said enough data was stolen to allow criminals to use credit card information for illicit purposes, and police were investigating.

Data security expert Trevor Reschke said that like any website which sees large volumes of card transactions, British Airways was a ripe target for hackers.

British Airways says its website and mobile app are back to normal and that it is contacting affected customers. We take the protection of our customers' data seriously and are very sorry for the concern that this criminal activity has caused.

BA has launched an urgent investigation into the data breach which involved 380,000 bank cards. It immediately contacted customers when the extent of the breach became clear.

"The breach has been resolved and our website is working normally".

Mat Thomas said he placed a booking on 27 August, but had not been contacted about the breach.

Will I have to get a new card? But what you do after you call the bank?

Gemma Theobald said she had booked on Sunday and only found out about the breach on Twitter.

And in May 2017, BA suffered a major computer system failure triggered by a power supply issue near Heathrow which left 75,000 customers stranded. It said it would pay for a credit check for customers, and promised to reimburse them for any losses.

The incident comes after an IT meltdown caused huge disruption for BA passengers at the start of the May half-term holiday.

British Airways experienced an IT-related crisis in May previous year when roughly 75,000 passengers were stranded after the airline cancelled more than 700 flights over three days because of system problems.

This is not the first customer relations problem to affect the airline in recent times.

"One will be figuring out which cards have been compromised and alerting victims, whilst the other will be trying to abuse them while they are still fresh".
