Hamas threatens Israel after two fighters killed

U.S. President Donald Trump speaks about the mass shooting at a Florida high school

Two Hamas terrorists were killed on Tuesday when an Israel Defense Forces' tank returned fire after being attacked during a patrol.

The Israeli army said the two Palestinians "opened fire at Israeli soldiers", and published a video of the two fighters reportedly firing at soldiers, while Hamas said the allegation has no basis, as the fighters were training, and firing fixed targets. "An IDF tank targeted the post from which the shots were fired", the military said.

United Nations officials have called for the blockade to be lifted, citing deteriorating humanitarian conditions in the Palestinian enclave run by Islamist movement Hamas where 80 percent of the two million population are dependent on aid. The shelling killed two Palestinians.

The incident took place as Egypt was working to broker a cease-fire deal between Hamas and Israel.

Israel's security cabinet discussed the proposal on Sunday, but afterwards ministers said only that the Israeli military was "prepared for any scenario".

United Nations and Egyptian-led efforts are under way to mediate a long-term truce between Israel and Hamas that would end a four-month upsurge of violence along the Israel-Gaza border.

Hamas said in response that "Israel is responsible for this entire escalation", and warned that "the resistance will not accept the [Israeli] policy of attacking its positions and fighters without Israel paying a price".

Ezzeddine al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, for its part, said that the two Palestinians were Abdulhafeth Silawi 23, and Ahmad Murjan 23 from the Jabalia camp in the northern Gaza strip and they belong to the brigades.

Over the past four months, 160 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire, including at least 120 in the protests near the fence, according to the Gaza Health Ministry and a local rights group.

Tensions have soared since Hamas launched mass protests along the border in March.
