British PM wins key Brexit vote despite ‘big’ rebellion..

Theresa May is turning her attention over Brexit from London to Brussels

Twelve Conservative MPs rebelled against the government to vote for a proposal that would have kept the United Kingdom in the customs union if no alternative plan for frictionless trade with the EU had been agreed by January 2019.

The Commons voted by 307 to 301 against the amendment from pro-EU Tory rebels that would have wrecked the Prime Minister's Brexit strategy and plunged the government into chaos. With twelve of their own backbench MPs rebelling, they had to rely upon four Brexiteer Labour MPs voting with them to ensure the amendment failed.

With talks swirling on whether the current proposed Brexit deal is just a starting point from which the British government will regress, May took the opportunity to address concerns during a joint Press conference with Donald Trump.

Fox called the trade plan "the confident first step that the United Kingdom takes towards establishing itself as an independent trading nation for the first time in over 40 years", which can only happen when it leaves the European bloc. The amendment was passed by 305 votes to 201, which forced May to maintain as an important goal the UK's continued adherence to the European regulatory network for medicines.

Mrs May faced a potential revolt on the Taxation (Cross-border Trade) Bill, often referred to as the Customs Bill.

Mr Davies, a Brexit supporter, said he hoped the amendment did not scupper the plan drawn up by the Prime Minister at Chequers.

Brexiteers believe that keeps Britain too close to the European Union, while pro-Europeans think it fails to protect the country's dominant services sector, among other gripes.

The prime minister's meeting with Conservative lawmakers Wednesday is seen as a last chance to rally her forces before a six-week summer recess.

There has been speculation in Westminster that Boris Johnson could take the opportunity to make a statement following his resignation as foreign secretary over the Chequers Brexit plan.

It sparked an extraordinary show of unity from Britain's Jewish community as 68 rabbis, many of whom disagree on many topics and some do not even recognize each other as rabbis, formed a coalition to condemn anti-Semitism, attacking Labour's position. The move infuriated pro-European Conservatives, sowing the seeds for Tuesday's unsuccessful rebellion.

"I'm passionately opposed to Brexit and I still believe it can be changed", the 65-year-old told AFP in the offices of his non-profit organization, the Institute for Global Change.

The Irish prime minister (taoiseach) has said his government is preparing to hire 1,000 customs and veterinary inspectors to deal with changes in rules of trade between the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland in 2021.

He described Ms Greening's call for a second referendum as "a little ill-thought out", saying: "If we wanted to extend the uncertainty for another long period this is one way of doing it".

In a 12-minute statement, he said: "It is not too late to save Brexit".

"Theresa May is in a more hard position than I was", he told ITV News.

"That is because pharmaceutical companies will apply for licences in the much larger American, European and Asian markets before they come to the UK".

The tension over Brexit spiked again Tuesday, when Britain's election watchdog, the Electoral Commission, ruled that the official pro-Brexit campaign group Vote Leave had broken the law on political spending during the 2016 referendum campaign over membership in the bloc.
