Putin leaves World Cup ball in Trump's half

US President Donald Trump and Russia's President Vladimir Putin shake hands after their joint news conference in the Presidential Palace in Helsinki Finland

Appearing side-by-side at a news conference after their much-anticipated two-hour summit in Helsinki on Monday, Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin both cast doubt on what virtually all US intelligence agencies have agreed upon - that Russia meddled in the 2016 election.

After President Donald Trump's stunning news conference Monday next to Russian President Vladimir Putin, members of Congress - including some within his own party - were quick to rebuke Trump's performance on the world stage and Trump's refusal to call Putin out for interfering in the United States election.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said Trump had missed an opportunity to firmly hold Russian Federation accountable for 2016 meddling and deliver a warning about any efforts to interfere in future USA elections.

At a joint appearance in Finland with Vladimir Putin, Trump repeated the Russian leader's denials about involvement in the election.

Associated Press reporter Jonathan Lemire asked Trump who he believed: the USA intelligence community, which has overwhelming said that Russian Federation interfered with United States elections, or Putin?

Trump said "I addressed the issue of Russian interference in our elections".

Asked what Putin gained from the meeting with Trump, Corker said he thought the Russian leader "gained a tremendous amount". Such work could be conducted by a joint Russian-US cybersecurity group, the idea of which was floated by Putin during his last meeting with Trump in Hamburg.

Trump responded by echoing a bombshell tweet in which he derided his own country's past "foolishness and stupidity" for the state of relations between Russian Federation and the US.

Just before going behind closed doors though, Trump, who had not been clear about his plans for the conversation, described a long list of topics he wanted to discuss but did not mention Russia's interference in the 2016 election or the upcoming midterm elections.

"I didn't even know he was in Moscow", said Putin, despite having gifted Trump a mysterious black box during his 2013 visit which contents remain unknown to this day.

Mr Trump said: "If we are going to solve numerous problems facing our world, we will have to find ways to cooperate". In response, Coats issued a statement saying USA intelligence has been "clear in our assessments of Russian meddling" and that the intelligence agencies "we will continue to provide unvarnished and objective intelligence in support of our national security".

Democratic Sen. Christopher S. Murphy called Trump's trip to Europe, which included meetings with North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies, "one giant middle finger from President Trump to his own country. After today I am sure we and them want to end that problem". "I don't see any reason why it would be".

Or, Mr. Putin said, "we can meet you halfway" and allow Mr. Mueller to travel to Russia to observe the questioning of the officers by Russian authorities. We have 90 percent of the nuclear and that's not a good thing, it's not a bad thing.

Trump took the ball and thanked Putin for the gift.

Glor asked Trump about Coats' early warning on Saturday, when they sat down for the interview.
