Ryan issues warning to ex-FBI lawyer defying subpoena

Peter Strzok and Lisa Page

House Speaker Paul Ryan says he's "disturbed" by former Federal Bureau of Investigation lawyer Lisa Page's decision not to comply with a subpoena to be interviewed by two House committees behind closed doors Wednesday.

Strzok is set to testify before the Judiciary Committee and the House Oversight & Government Reform Committee on Thursday.

Jeffress accused the panels of using unnecessary "bullying tactics" to push Page into an interview immediately, especially when "she has offered to voluntarily appear before the committees later this month". "All she is asking is to be treated as other witnesses have under the committees' own rules", Jeffress said.

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.) was displeased by the letter from Page's lawyer.

President Donald Trump tweeted Wednesday about former Federal Bureau of Investigation agent Lisa Page's to testify before Congress.

Page and Strzok worked on the investigation of Clinton's private emails and the Russian Federation probe.

Other GOP members of the Judiciary Committee slammed Page's refusal to appear, with Ron DeSantis of Florida calling it "pathetic" and Jim Jordan of OH said she was "once again showing the double standard".

Democrats did not say what Strzok's responses to any of the questions were, but they did call for the full transcript of the meeting to be released by Republicans.

"We are aware of the issues raised regarding access to documents by the FBI", Goodlatte and Gowdy wrote.

Infamous former Federal Bureau of Investigation official Lisa Page said through her lawyer Tuesday that she would not be testifying before Congress on Wednesday as they had requested. She plans to blatantly defy a congressional subpoena by refusing to appear for her deposition.

Contempt votes are rare in Congress and often largely symbolic.

It's unclear if GOP lawmakers will actually hold a contempt vote if Page continues to defy the subpoena.

The Judiciary and Oversight panels have already spent much of the summer holding hearings and interviews critical of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Justice Department.

Strzok was removed from Mueller's team when the texts were discovered a year ago. Following that report and the firing of Comey by Trump, the Department of Justice Inspector General launched an investigation.

The president has also made frequent references to the fact that Page and Strzok were having an affair, which is noted in the Justice Department report.

But her lawyer said Page will testify at some point. Trump tweeted. "Wow, but is anybody really surprised!" Trump said of the decision. Trump tweeted. "Read his hate filled and totally biased Emails and the answer is clear!"

However, investigators did not find any political bias on behalf of Comey or the Federal Bureau of Investigation when it came to protecting or prosecuting Clinton. Page had already left the Mueller team. He was interviewed privately by lawmakers on the two committees for 11 hours June 27.

Republicans have said they disagree with that conclusion, which will likely be a significant focus of Thursday's public hearing.
