Russian officers indicted for hacking US Democrats

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein Announces Indictment Of 12 Russian Military Officers For DNC Hacking

Twelve Russian intelligence officers were indicted on charges they hacked into Democratic email accounts during the 2016 USA presidential election and released stolen information in the months before Americans headed to the polls, the Justice Department said Friday.

The indictment accuses the Russians of being heavily involved in hacking computer networks of the Democratic National Committee and Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign organization.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein was quoted as saying that the 12 Russians accused of hacking the committee used spear phishing emails and malicious software in their purported cyber attacks.

One group of officers were tasked with infiltrating computers and stealing data, while another worked to distribute it through anonymous channels in the U.S.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein announce details of the indictment at a press conference Friday afternoon.

Earlier Friday during a press conference overseas with his British counterpart, Trump vowed to press Putin about his government's interference in the 2016 American election - though he appeared to leave open, as always, the possibility that he won't.

U.S. prosecutors accuse the Russian intelligence officials of creating a fictitious, public-facing persona, dubbed "Guccifer 2.0", to serve as a conduit for the stolen DNC data and others prior to the 2016 election.

They corresponded with Americans but there's no information the Americans knew who they were talking to, said Rosenstein. Given that we are mere months away from a massively important state and local midterm election, you'd think people would be more concerned about protecting us from the continuing threat of Russian interference.

He said the indictments were "further proof of what everyone but the President seems to understand - President Putin is an adversary who interfered in our elections to help President Trump win". The GRU is an intelligence agency and part of the Russian military.

"Russia, if you're listening, I hope you're able to find the 30,000 emails that are missing", Trump said, looking directly into TV cameras, at a press conference in Florida that day in which he also cast doubt that Russian Federation was behind the hacking.

It should all make for an interesting meeting of President Trump and Putin next week in Helskinki.

Mr Rosenstein also said that the hackers were able to steal information on 500,000 voters from a state election board website.

In February, Mueller charged 13 Russians and three Russian companies in an elaborate conspiracy to interfere in the election.

The entire indictment can be read here, and it is an outcome of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation of election meddling.

The indictment comes just three days before the president is scheduled to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin at a summit in Helsinki.

While no American is charged in today's indictment, there is nothing in it about precluding any eventual charges against a USA citizen.

Mueller is investigating whether Trump's campaign colluded with Russian Federation and whether the president has unlawfully sought to obstruct the investigation.

We want to hear from you. "But I love getting along with Russian Federation and China and other countries".
