Difficult day for prime minister but not a disaster

Donald Trump with Theresa May

Some British politicians expressed outrage over Trump's interview, particularly his criticism of British Prime Minister Theresa May's Brexit negotiation strategy and claim that she "didn't listen" to his advice on the issue.

Trump also said the deal that May's government has proposed would "probably kill" any trade agreement with the USA because Washington "would be dealing with the European Union" instead of with the United Kingdom. As he said in his interview with The Sun she "is a very good person" and he 'never said anything bad about her.'.

May and Trump both spoke of the importance of the "special relationship" between their two countries, something that Brexit supporters hope will reap benefits when Britain leaves the European Union, allowing it to forge closer trade ties with the world's biggest economy.

The interview also touched on London Mayor Sadiq Khan, who Trump has criticized, including in the wake of apparent terrorist attacks on the UK's capital city.

We'll go to Britain for more on Trump's visit and the protests after headlines.

The shadow foreign secretary lashed the US President saying his comments were "rudeness upon rudeness upon rudeness".

"We stand by our reporting and the quotes we used - including those where the President was positive about the Prime Minister, in both the paper and in our audio - and we're delighted that the President essentially retracted his original charge against the paper later in the press conference". "Of course that's coming from NBC, which is possibly worse than CNN", he said, adding that her question was "dishonest reporting".

He said "the deal she is striking is a much different deal than the one the people voted on".

"Allowing the immigration to take place in Europe is a shame".

A blimp depicting Trump as a baby is flying outside parliament, and dozens of other demonstrations are planned across the UK.

Later on Friday, the president was due to pay a visit to Windsor Castle where he and First Lady Melania Trump will have tea with Queen Elizabeth II. "He is thankful for the wonderful welcome from the Prime Minister here in the U.K".

May said there are no limits to Britain doing trade deals once Britain leaves the European Union, adding: "We will do a trade deal with the USA and others around the world". He asked one of the reporters who was at the press conference to confirm he said "nice things" about May and that he wished they had put those in the headline of the story.

Looking ahead to his meeting with Russian president Vladimir Putin on Monday, Trump said he would be discussing many topics but his biggest hope was an agreement to substantially reduce nuclear proliferation - his ultimate dream was to get rid of the weapons altogether, he said.

Trump has insisted the US-UK relationship is "the highest level of special".

Some 51% of Britons think Mr Trump was right to make his views on Brexit public, while 45% think he should have kept them private - 4% did not know. I am assuming that his mum told him that when you go to someone's house you do not insult the host.
