Wimbledon 2018 -- Angelique Kerber advances to final

Angelique Kerber

"It's insane. I don't even know how to feel, you know, because literally, I didn't expect to do this well in my fourth tournament back", Williams, 36, said, according to the Associated Press.

"Yeah, I think she is coming back, for sure".

"It's not inevitable for me to be playing like this", Williams said. I think everybody knows this tournament.

That's not the case.

Williams will now face Angelique Kerber in Saturday's final in a repeat of the 2016 showpiece, a match the American won in straight sets.

While its the pair's first royal outing as a twosome, it won't be Meghan's first visit to Wimbledon: she previously attended the event in 2016 to cheer on her longtime friend, 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena. Williams has won all four of their encounters.

In the second set, the left-handed Kerber quickly went into the lead with Ostapenko choosing to live as dangerously as before.

Following the announcement Williams said: "We've always had a wonderful friendship". Instead, Kerber employed spectacular defense and solid, steady play, while letting Ostapenko determine the outcome of almost every point. In Thursday's other semifinal, Kerber, the No. 11 seed, dominated No. 12 Jelena Ostapenko 6-3, 6-3.

Serena Williams celebrates after winning against Italy's Camila Giorgi during their women's singles quarter-final match on the eighth day of the 2018 Wimbledon Championships at The All England Lawn Tennis Club in Wimbledon, London, July 10, 2018.

Each time Knox responded, with the pair the last ones standing in a round where several players launched bids at the title. However, a second monstrous putt from Knox put the pressure back on Fox to hole out to get it to a second playoff hole.

"It is a completely new match", said Kerber, who failed to make a Grand Slam quarterfinal in 2017, won zero tournaments, fell from No. 1 to 21 and changed coaches.

But the seven-time Wimbledon is not merely planning on matching the Aussie's 24-Slam haul and insists she won't "limit" herself by setting a finite target.

However, the 14 errors meant that Kerber, at the third attempt, broke to lead 4-3.

"It wasn't as tight as I was used to", she said last month.

There were no drawn-out points in the early going, no lengthy baseline exchanges, essentially because Ostapenko wouldn't allow it.

And Kerber, who has just two wins over her in eight meetings, knows she can not underestimate her current level.

Goerges was trying to find a way back, but came unstuck once again in the sixth game.

In the first set, the experienced Kerber broke twice while the only break-point Ostapenko earned was when she was leading 3-2. Or, more to the point on this afternoon, how such a stinging serve and groundstrokes didn't help her avoid first-round exits each of the past five years at Wimbledon.
