The week Brexit got real: Britain turns pragmatic READ MORE

The Prime Minister has now since filled the vacant positions but the impact of the swift departures may have more lasting consequences on her place in Downing Street.

Britain's endless self-inflicted turmoil over Brexit has taken a fresh turn, with Prime Minister Theresa May's new plan for a post-Brexit trade agreement and the resignations of key ministers from her government.

Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson and Brexit Secretary David Davis both quit the government this week in protest.

Johnson's dramatic resignation followed those of David Davis and his deputy Steve Baker over May's plans to keep Britain economically close to the bloc.

He is replaced at Health and Social Care by Culture Secretary Matt Hancock, who will in turn be succeeded by Attorney General Jeremy Wright.

May has briefed leaders including EU President Donald Tusk and German Chancellor Angela Merkel on her plan and reported a positive response, although they are awaiting the detail.

"I would be surprised if one [a leadership contest] is precipitated and if there is, I suspect she'd win it", he said. Bradley called on May to "deliver Brexit in spirit as well as in name".

Many Brexit-backing Tory MPs are anxious the proposals will inevitably be watered down during the negotiations and the United Kingdom will have to accept further concessions.

Asked if he was planning to quit, environment Secretary Michael Gove said "absolutely not".

An EU source said: "We will look at these things constructively, and in a way that is helpful to the prime minister".

The slew of resignations could possibly point to members of Parliament demanding a vote of no confidence in May, even though her team is confident that their Brexit plan would pass if it gets put to a vote.

But Owen Jones, a left-wing journalist and lead organiser of Britain's "Stop Trump" protests, disagreed. Mrs May will host Mr Trump and his wife Melania at a lavish dinner at Blenheim Palace this evening.

In the rescues, two divers are being allocated for each boy to guide them through the exit route, one in front and one behind. When they failed to return home, a huge search operation was launched and they were found 10 days later, weak but alive.

Ambassador Johnson said he would facilitate a meeting between Trump and Boris Johnson, who is seen as a potential challenger to May, telling BBC radio: "If the president wants to do that and he feels it's appropriate, he'll make that decision".

The pound rose on Thursday as traders bet that a Brexit white paper policy document could help restart negotiations on trade between the European Union and Britain for when it leaves the bloc next March.

"Alongside this unprecedented economic partnership, we also want to build an unrivalled security partnership, and an unparalleled partnership on cross-cutting issues like data, and science and innovation".

But Parliament would oversee the UK's trade policy and have the ability to "choose" to diverge from the European Union rules.

For the City of London the plan would propose "a looser partnership" with the European Union rather than original proposals for "mutual recognition" of British and European Union rules after Britain leaves the bloc in March, the Financial Times reported.

The Chequers deal met everything they had been asked to do, including ending free movement and European jurisdiction and stopping payments to the EU, he said.

The trans-Atlantic relationship has had some awkward moments since Trump's election.

Mr Trump said he had not spoken with the PM, adding: "Boris Johnson is a friend of mine".

On Monday night, while addressing her backbenchers, May said without their support, Corbyn could run the country as prime minister.

"He's been very, very nice to me, very supportive".

"And I think without David Davis there, without his imprimatur, it will be very hard for them to get the support of Conservative MPs and therefore the Prime Minister would be well advised to reconsider them".
