TV viewers prioritising World Cup over Wimbledon

Fans celebrate in Bristol as England scored its second goal against Sweden on Saturday

Wimbledon chiefs insisted again Monday that the men´s final will start at its traditional time despite clashing with a potential England World Cup triumph but will have no objection if the Centre Court crowd want to take sneak peeks of the action from Moscow on their phones.

Those who stuck around appeared more interested in following the action from Russian Federation via electronic devices instead of watching the tennis take place in front of them.

Defending champion Roger Federer, who is more than likely to be playing in Sunday´s final, joked that maybe the World Cup final should move to accommodate the Wimbledon title match.

There had been talk of the World Cup final being shown on the big screen on Henman Hill at Wimbledon, but that has been ruled out.

Football hopes are running at their highest since 1996, when England played (and lost to) Germany in the semi-final of the European Cup.

Club rules that all mobile phones and tablets should be switched off "in and around the courts of play" have been relaxed, however, with Lewis stating that they would only be enforced if they affected others.

Mary Rose Trinidad and her husband were properly restrained in the vehicle, but their four daughters were not, police said. Audie Trinidad, 61, was pronounced dead at the scene. "They were very kind and generous", said 14-year-old Laysha Stengel.

"We are a sold-out event and there's massive interest", Richard Lewis, chief executive of the All England Tennis Club, told the BBC.

'What will happen next Sunday is Centre Court will be packed for the men's singles final and I'm sure people will be able to follow the World Cup final, ' Lewis told Independent.

"It's not unheard of for there to be a ripple of applause or a shout when something special happens in a football tournament, and I'm sure everybody will understand if it does". We didn't receive a single complaint from anyone who was here who felt their enjoyment of the tennis was interrupted and I'm sure it'll be the same next Sunday.

Still, spectators will have to utilize their own resources to watch the match, as the club also declined to show the game on the big screen just outside of one of the stadiums.

Facing continuing conflicts with England's run through the 2018 FIFA World Cup, Wimbledon has made a decision to relax its rules about mobile phones.

"Hopefully England will get through to the final and it will be one of the very special days at Wimbledon".
