Trump's Harsh Words For NATO Meet With Pushback From Republicans And Democrats

President Donald Trump and Melania Trump walks down the stairs during their arrival on Air Force One at Melsbroek Air Base Tuesday

The former USA secretary of state and MA senator questioned if the president, who has long railed against North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, understood the "huge difference" the group has made for the United States and Europe.

Trump's comments referred to Berlin's support for the construction of the $12 billion Nord Stream 2 pipeline to bring gas across the Baltic Sea into the European continent. Germany is the largest economy in the EU.

"NATO benefits Europe far more than it does the US", Trump wrote.

"President Trump has a very direct language and message on defence spending, but fundamentally we all agree that we need fair burden sharing", Stoltenberg said on his arrival at the summit.

"Explain that", Trump said.

Later, Mr. Trump and German Chancellor Angela Merkel exchanged pleasantries for the cameras during a one-on-one meeting.

He saidthey discussed defense investment and trade, adding: "We have a tremendous relationship with Germany".

Canada 'caught in the crossfire' of US-China trade dispute
The official added that China has warned the US that future actions would be met with "economic attacks" on American markets. The International Monetary Fund has warned that a full-blown trade war could undermine the broadest global upswing in years.

European exporters in China shift trade to avoid United States tariffs
The United States has listed $200 billion in Chinese export goods that could be hit with 10% tariffs as soon as September. But Mr Trump hasn't backed down, arguing that China's unfair trading practices are hurting American workers.

"We're supposed to protect you against Russian Federation", he told Stoltenberg, "but they're paying billions of dollars to Russian Federation and I think that's very inappropriate". Trump and Putin are set to meet on July 16 in Finland.

By slapping higher tariffs on European Union metals experts and threatening more on cars, Trump has shown his anger at the US trade deficit with the European Union.

President Donald Trump shared on Twitter Wednesday a video of sharp words he directed toward NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg about Germany being "totally controlled by Russia" regarding their energy relationship.

'President Trump, who spoke first, raised the issue not only to achieve 2 percent, today, but a new barrier - 4 percent, ' Bulgarian President Rumen Radev told reporters, according to the wire service Reuters.

The comment illustrated how Trump often seeks to avoid conflict with people when he is face to face with them versus the often-harsher rhetoric he uses when he's talking behind their back.

Trump said it was "very inappropriate" that the USA is contributing to the defence of Europe when one of its richest countries is supporting a major energy project with Moscow.

Stoltenberg, who is a former Norwegian prime minister and not German, told Trump that allies traded with Russian Federation even during the Cold War, the Post reported. "And I think that leaders are also looking forward to your thoughts about the meeting with President Putin later on". Not fair to the USA taxpayer. Also present was France's President Emmanuel Macron, who tried this year to charm Mr Trump into more harmonious transatlantic relationship, only to see the United States president withdraw from the 2015 Iranian nuclear deal and impose tariffs on European goods. At breakfast he had spoken of Germany as a "captive" of Russian Federation because of the two countries' energy relationship, which he labelled "inappropriate". US Turkish relations have recently been strained because of issues ranging from Syria to Iran, but some diplomats say the two leaders - both criticised for their polarising politics - have established a bond.
