Shark bites Instagram model during Bahamas photo shoot

Staniel Cay Marina

The 19-year-old said the swim with the sharks wasn't organised by a tour company, and while her boyfriend's family were "freaking out" over the idea, she reassured them it was fine because she regularly surfs in California.

A Florida student, who is also a model, says she's lucky to be alive after being bitten by a shark during a photo shoot. "What happened was an accident, and I don't want to throw the shark under the bus", Zarutske said.

Zarutskie maintains she "love [s] sharks".

Nurse Sharks are often considered docile and harmless, but are known to occasionally bite people if they are bothered in their habitat or mistaken a hand or arm for food.

Immediately after getting out of the water, Zarutskie went to a clinic at the marina and had her wound cleaned and wrapped.

"[The doctors] now believe that I still have pieces of the shark teeth in my arm and I will forever have a scar", said Zarutskie, who noted she was anxious about the injury affecting her burgeoning modeling career. She's been taking various antibiotics to prevent infection from bacteria, and admitted that she's anxious about how this injury will affect her modeling career. "I leaned back, and then that shark he came and he bit down on my arm and pulled me under", she said.

She was in the Bahamas with her family and boyfriend.

Zarutskie said she immediately headed for the stairs to get out of the water, holding her bloody arm above her head to keep it out of the water.

"At that point your body has so much adrenaline going and you just have to get out of the situation, but I stayed extremely calm", she says.

But while posing for the pictures a shark bit into the model's wrist and held her underwater for several seconds. She got out of the water with just the wrist injury.

She added she's concerned the scarring could affect her modelling career.
