Trump nominates Brett Kavanaugh to Supreme Court

President Donald Trump said Sunday he was still deliberating his decision on a replacement for Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy as his self-imposed deadline for an announcement neared amid furious lobbying and frenzied speculation.

Kavanaugh stands to be President Trump's second appointment to the Supreme Court after Neil Gorsuch's appointment earlier in his term.

"I have interviewed many candidates for the federal bench, including (Chief Justice John) Roberts and (Justice Samuel) Alito", said Bush's former attorney general, Alberto Gonzales, said. Other Democrats who represent heavily Republican states will also be under pressure to support the nominee.

McConnell reportedly told Trump that Kavanaugh, a former assistant and staff secretary to former President George W. Bush, has an extensive paper trail that could help Democrats prolong the nomination process. He served on the Senate Judiciary Committee during the confirmations of four of the last five justices who have joined the Supreme Court.

"Judge Kavanaugh's reasoning on religious liberty, Obamacare, and issues concerning life have proven to be of major concern", said AFA President Tim Wildmon.

The president has spent the days leading up to the decision mulling the pros and cons of the various options with aides and allies.

With a slim one vote majority in the Senate, any GOP defections could prove problematic in winning confirmation for Trump's eventual choice, that is if Democrats hold together in opposition.

Kavanaugh, 53, on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, is a favorite of the conservative legal establishment because of his long record on issues ranging from the separation of powers and executive privilege to abortion, immigration and gun rights.

A Maryland native whose mother was a public school teacher who went on to serve as a state judge in Maryland, Kavanaugh got his undergraduate and law degrees from Yale University. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell also received a heads-up from the president.

McConnell reportedly spoke often to Trump and White House general counsel Don McGahn throughout the selection process and was anxious about the vast number of documents Kavanaugh had amassed during his 12 years on the D.C. appeals court could prove problematic.

The White House invited a number of senators to attend the Monday night announcement, including Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, and committee member Kennedy.

Republican Sen. Cory Gardner released the following statement regarding President Trump's announcement that he will be nominating Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.

Kennedy said he was bracing for a tough confirmation battle as Democrats focus on the nominee's views of the high court's Roe v. Wade ruling legalizing abortion. His friends? What is within the scope of Mueller's investigation?

"I've never seen a president of the United States in effect make himself a puppet of outside groups and choose from a group of right-wing fringe ideologues", he said on ABC's "This Week".

Even if Republicans lose one or two votes, they will likely still be able to confirm the nominee - who is expected to be announced Monday evening - with the support of several Democrats up for re-election in November in states where Trump is overwhelmingly popular.

In his conversations over the weekend, Trump expressed renewed interest in Hardiman _ the runner-up when Trump nominated Gorsuch, said two people with knowledge of his thinking who were not authorized to speak publicly.

He called the system Trump is using to pick the nominee - mining from a pre-chosen pool of 25 conservative candidates - "corrupt".
