Feds on track to reunite 54 of 102 illegal immigrant families

Children were increasingly separated from their parents after Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced in May that a zero-tolerance policy on illegally entering the country was in full effect. They come amid a tide of national and worldwide outrage over such young children being taken from their parents.

We are thrilled that more than 50 little children will be reunited with their parents by tomorrow, but we are extremely disappointed that it's not a greater number.

After a federal judge ordered the Trump administration to reunite the immigrant families it has separated, there's been a trickle of stories of parents being reunited with their kids.

Seventy-one children are "likely eligible" to be reunited with their parents but have not yet been ― 51 of them with parents in Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody who may be reunited on or soon after Tuesday, 12 whose parents were deported and eight whose parents were already released into the U.S. The reunification for families in which parents were already deported or released will take longer, the government said. Fabian said two of those children have already been reunited, and another 54 will be reunited by Tuesday.

The ACLU sued in March on behalf of a Congolese woman who was separated from her daughter for five months after seeking asylum at a San Diego border crossing and a Brazilian asylum-seeker who was separated from her son after an arrest for illegal entry in August near the Texas-New Mexico border. Some children were brought to the United States by someone who was not their biological parent, it said, adding that others had parents with serious criminal records. Thirty children will not be reunited by Tuesday, for a range of reasons.

The hearing only covered the roughly 100 children under the age of 5 who were separated from their parents under the administration's "zero tolerance" border prosecution policy. We are just asking that the parent be given back their child.

And if they continue to drag on, what would you ask the judge to do in that instance?

Narongsak said rescuers had to tighten a guide rope as part of their preparations for the second phase of the rescue on Monday. The entire operation to rescue all 13 could last two to four days, depending on weather and water conditions, said army Maj.

Numerous separated children are fleeing violence in Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador, and U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen met with diplomats from those countries in Guatemala on Tuesday to discuss U.S. immigration policies.

The hearing Monday focused primarily on the status of the youngest children and did not include details on whether the government would be able to meet the deadline for reuniting the older children with their parents later this month.

"I would adopt a more streamlined approach here", he said, adding: "The parents are not applying for custody".

Here's a look at some of the situations that families might face even after being reunited.

Among the other remaining question marks is whether authorities can streamline their vetting process for the migrant parents - which ACLU attorneys have described as needlessly cumbersome - and whether the government can pass along the locations migrant families will be released from custody, so that charity groups can more quickly offer them support.

US District Judge Dolly Gee said the government had failed to present new evidence to support revising a court order that limits the detention of children who crossed the border illegally.
