Woman arrested after scaling Statue of Liberty in protest

A woman has climbed the bottom of the Statue of Liberty in New York City

Okoumou is scheduled to appear in Manhattan Federal Court on Thursday. With her lawyer Rhiya Trivedi, Okoumou spoke outside a NY courthouse about her status as a naturalized United States citizen from the Democratic Republic of Congo and the goals of her protest.

The heroic Black woman, who is an immigrant herself, rose up in resistance and climbed the Statue of Liberty on the Fourth of July.

Rise and Resist is now working to secure her legal representation.

The protest group, Rise and Resist, earlier said the climb wasn't connected to the banner demonstration.

She declared she wouldn't come down until "all the children are released", a source with the New York Police Department told CNN.

Local media first reported that the woman was among demonstrators opposed to Trump's immigration policy who protested at the site earlier.

Okoumou, a 44-year-old naturalized citizen who immigrated from the Republic of Congo in 1994, was met with applause as she spoke outside court, saying that while she wouldn't repeat her actions, she believes her message got across.

Therese Patricia Okoumou, a Congolese immigrant, is being described as a hero after she climbed the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty in a July 4th protest against the Trump administration's policy that separated migrant children from their parents. You know, I explained to her that we want you to come down that would be the best way.

Canada presses USA to resume NAFTA renegotiation talks
But Jim Watson does, and sent his regrets this year, saying he's unhappy about the "constant attacks on our country". They discussed border security and trade, with a specific focus on the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

Donning a "white supremacy is terrorism" shirt outside of the courthouse on Thursday, Okoumou said her decision was "spur of the moment".

The paper did not specify whether she was in the country legally or illegally. "She's been an active member of Rise and Resist for four or five months", Walker said.

"She just kind of mentioned the kids in Texas".

"As alleged in the information, the defendant staged a unsafe stunt that alarmed the public and endangered her own life and the lives of the NYPD officers who responded to the scene".

"She broke the law and will be charged federally", Jerry Willis, a spokesman for the U.S. National Parks Service, told the Daily News.

The group later released a statement on Twitter that said the protest did not include the climber.

The copper-pounded skin is only the thickness of two pennies but "it's strong", he said. The group said in a tweet that the woman climbing the statue is not related to their protest. "She's survived quite well". Willis says police are atop the base, advising the climber to go down.
