California Gov. Jerry Brown declared a state of emergency in San Diego County, saying people and property are under "extreme peril" due to the West Fire.

The new blazes came as Southern California saw many areas top 38 degrees Celsius on Friday and more than a dozen areas got record-breaking temperatures for the day.

Also near San Diego, firefighters were battling the 10-acre Building Fire.

Haupt said Friday the fire is burning through grassland, oak and smaller brush and that it has destroyed several homes and killed livestock and horses.

Although the flames have not crossed into OR, officials are concerned people in remote areas can't be reached in case they need to quickly evacuate.

Farther south, a fire in the San Bernardino National Forest grew to 1,000 acres and prompted the evacuation of Forest Falls, a town of about 700 homes.

The center says, at last check, the facility was still standing and the fire only burned around the edges.

The fire spans about 75 square miles (193 square kilometers) near a popular fishing reservoir about 80 miles (130 kilometers) southeast of Salt Lake City, according to the Utah Division Forestry Fire State Lands.
