'Psychic' World Cup Octopus killed for food in Japan

Reports on social media say this is what Rabiot looks like now. Credit YouTube/北海道ニュースUHB

Rabio, a giant Pacific octopus, went on to rack up a flawless record by also predicting Japan's draw with Senegal and their defeat to Poland as they narrowly qualified as runners-up in their group. Despite losing to the Poles, Japan advanced courtesy of the fact that its players had received fewer cautions during the three group stage games.

Rabiot was caught in the coastal town of Obira, north-west of Hokkaido, on the day of Japan's opening World Cup match against Colombia in Russian Federation on June 19.

Well with Japan out of the World Cup, there seems hardly any need for Rabio now.

In 2010 FIFA World Cup, we had Paul the Octopus which made the headlines for his accurate predictions of match results.

Kimio Abe, the fisherman who caught him, broke the tragic news but says that he has reeled in a new eight-legged successor to Rabiot - named Rabiot Jr.

Polish Supreme Court 1st President refuses to retire
Nobel Peace Prize victor Walesa said he would come to Warsaw from his hometown of Gdansk on Wednesday to defend the Supreme Court. Lech Wałęsa has also suggested he will protest , saying on his Facebook that the reforms were "enough to destroy Poland".

Mere days after successfully guiding Japan through to the first knockout stage, Abe revealed that Rabio had been "shipped" - that is, killed, gutted, cleaned, and sent to the market to be sold for food.

By now, you probably know that this did not exactly go to plan.

Rabiot's death, however, turned out to be a telling event in predicting Japan's own exit from the World Cup as the country suffered a 3-2 loss to Belgium in a thrilling elimination match. Well, apart from maybe a psychic octopus. Psychic octopus gets slaughtered for food.

Rabio was caught by a fisherman in Hokkaido, on the day Japan played against Columbia - their first World Cup game of 2018. Japan lose their next game in heartbreaking fashion.
