Coffee drinking connected to lower risk of death, study finds

The latest study to link coffee and longevity adds to a growing body of evidence that far from a vice the brew can be protective of good health

The mean age of the participants was 57 years (range, 38-73 years); 271 019 (54%) were female, and 387 494 (78%) were coffee drinkers. For the current study, the researchers analyzed information provided by about 500,000 people, who answered questions about their coffee consumption, smoking and drinking habits, health history and more.

The live-giving properties of a cup of joe even stayed in place for the survey's 10,000 respondents who drank eight cups or more a day. "These results provide further evidence that coffee drinking can be part of a healthy diet and may provide reassurance to those who drink coffee and enjoy it". To reap the benefit, it doesn't matter if your coffee is decaf or instant or caffeinated, the researchers said.

Enigma Cafe staff member Clarke Gardiner said coffee for him was "the essence of energy to wake up in the morning", drinking multiple coffees every day at work - including at night time.

But coffee drinkers in the study didn't have higher risks than non-drinkers of dying from heart disease and other blood pressure-related causes.

That's because a massive new British study, examining the coffee habits and longevity of almost 500,000 adults, says there's an unmistakable across-the-board increase in longevity among people who drink lots of coffee. Firstly, the study involved a half a million people from the UK Biobank, a 10-year population-based study that ran from 2006 to 2016. Two studies published in the Annals of Internal Medicine in July connected coffee drinking to a longer life.

"Participants drinking four or more cups per day, compared with those drinking less coffee and nondrinkers, were more likely to drink instant coffee and be current smokers, whereas participants drinking one to three cups per day were older, more likely to have a university degree, and more likely to report "excellent" health". But it turns out that even slow caffeine metabolizers seem to share the death-risk-reduction connected to coffee drinking.

If this option is chosen, they would have to use diving gear by themselves and pass through one after another, Gen Anupong said . If it were employed, he said they "have to be certain that it will work and have to have a drill to make that it's 100% safe".

The research didn't include whether participants drank coffee black or with cream and sugar.

Researchers say this suggests caffeine wasn't responsible, but as the study was observational more research is required to determine what is behind the benefit. "Like so many plant foods", she said, "the coffee bean is brimming with polyphenols that, research suggests, confer health benefits, such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, anti-diabetes and antihypertensive properties".

Nonetheless, the new study's findings are a positive for coffee lovers.

People should also be aware that some people have a physical sensitivity to coffee.

In the end, there were 14,225 deaths due to cancer (58 percent); cardiovascular disease (20 percent) and respiratory disease (4 percent).

The health benefits of the caffeinated pick-me-up have always been debated.
