Democrats Urge McConnell: No Vote on Kennedy Replacement Until After Midterms

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy prepares to testify before the House Financial Services and General Government Subcommittee on Capitol Hill

Asked about Barrett, he said, "She's an outstanding woman".

"Given the stakes of this Supreme Court seat, which will determine the fate of fundamental constitutional rights, the American people, who will vote in less than 4 months, deserve to have their voice heard", Harris posted on Twitter.

Justice Antonin Scalia died February 13, 2016, leaving a once-conservative seat open for replacement by then-President Obama. In 2003, he was nominated by Bush to the appeals court, but it took a recess appointment and a two-year standoff before Republicans and Democrats finally crafted a deal that confirmed him to the position.

"Just because something is deemed legal does not make it moral or just", activist Linda Sarsour told the crowd, evoking earlier, since discredited Supreme Court rulings that affirmed slavery or Japanese internment camps.

When asked whether he would be asking candidates about their opinions on abortion rights, Trump stated, "That's not a question I'll be asking".

Hardiman and Thapar were among the group interviewed by Trump before he selected Neil Gorsuch for a vacancy past year.

With the news that conservative Justice Anthony Kennedy is to retire, a huge opportunity has landed in Donald Trump's lap.

Annapolis Mayor Gavin Buckley said he was so proud of the journalists who had "soldiered on". "They don't make a lot of money". Investigators were said to be looking into "violent" threats that had been made against the Capital Gazette via social media.

Speaking aboard Air Force One, the president said he will spend the weekend interviewing some candidates at his golf club in New Jersey.

He added, "I think it's inappropriate to discuss". The FBI is still conducting background checks, the person said.

US Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy has announced he is retiring at the age of 81. "We're hoping there will be some Democratic support", he said, "We're not assuming this is just going to be a straight party-line vote".

But Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell indicated he was opposed to waiting, saying that "we will vote to confirm Justice Kennedy's successor this fall".

US President Donald Trump has said he has narrowed his list of Supreme Court Justice candidates to five, including two women, with a final decision to be announced on July 9. "Usually they don't say that".

Trump did not name the five names on his short list, which he has said will be pulled from a list of 25 judges he first released during the 2016 campaign. "I stressed the importance of nominating someone to the Supreme Court who is pragmatic, fair, compassionate, committed to justice, and above politics". Kennedy turns 82 in July and was the oldest justice behind 85-year-old Ruth Bader Ginsburg. If the Senate divides 50-50, Vice President Mike Pence could break a tie to confirm the nominee. The partisan bombast over who'll replace Kennedy promises to be the biggest political fight thus far of the already turbulent Trump presidency. Kennedy, appointed by President Ronald Reagan, has been a swing vote on issues like abortion and affirmative action to gay rights and capital punishment.

In a statement, Murkowski noted her standards for the Supreme Court are "extremely high" and that she will cast an "independent vote" when the eventual nominee comes before the Senate.
