5 dead in newsroom shooting

Maryland police officers patrol the area after multiple people were shot at at The Capital Gazette newspaper in Annapolis Md. Thursday

The suspect accused of killing five people in a shooting at a Maryland newspaper had damaged the tips of his fingers in an apparent attempt to thwart efforts by police to identify him by his fingerprints, a law enforcement officials tells CBS News.

Jarrod Ramos, a resident of Laurel, Maryland, sued the newspaper in 2012, accusing a former reporter of defamation over an article titled "Jarrod wants to be your friend". "He entered the building with a shotgun and he looked for his victims as he walked through the lower level".

According to the court case, Ramos had pleaded guilty on July 26, 2011 in Anne Arundel County on a charge of criminal harassment and got a 90-day suspended jail sentence. "This person was prepared today to come in". Carl Hiaasen said he was "devastated and heartsick" at the loss of his brother, "one of the most gentle and amusing people I've ever known". Three other journalists and a staffer were killed: editorial page editor Gerald Fischman; special publications editor Wendi Winters; writer John McNamara, and sales assistant Rebecca Smith. The newspaper said two other employees had non-life threatening injuries and were later released from a hospital.

Phil Davis, a Capital Gazette reporter, tweeted the "gunman shot through the glass door to the office and opened fire on multiple employees".

"A single shooter shot multiple people at my office, some of whom are dead", he wrote.

"There is nothing more terrifying than hearing multiple people get shot while you're under your desk and then hear the gunman reload", he said.

A number of reports indicate that the shooter has been identified as Jarrod Warren Ramos.

Two law enforcement sources said his fingerprints appeared to have been altered, which made it hard to identify him, but one law enforcement source said he was identified through facial recognition software.

Law enforcement in Baltimore and New York City deployed extra officers to the office of the New York Times and other major media outlets as a precaution, authorities said.

At the White House, spokeswoman Lindsay Walters said: "There is no room for violence, and we stick by that". One suspect is said to be in custody. In the piece, Hartley is said to have spoken about Ramos and an unnamed woman's conversation on Facebook and how the man had demeaned the woman, used vulgar language and even told her to kill herself, reported Reuters.

Police spokesman Lt. Ryan Frashure said officers arrived within about 60 seconds and took the gunman into custody without an exchange of gunfire.

Sean Robinson, who works for an insurance company on the building's top floor, took shelter away as far as possible from the entrance and texted his wife to say, "Hey, this is going on".

Live video images showed people leaving the building, walking through a parking lot with their hands in the air.

Hiassen, 59, brother of best-selling author Carl Hiaasen, joined The Capital, the group's flagship title, in 2010 as assistant editor after working as a reporter at the Baltimore Sun for 15 years.

In an interview appearing on The Capital Gazette's online site, Davis said it "was like a war zone" inside the newspaper's offices.

He said that police did not yet know the shooter's motive, but "we know that there were threats sent to the Gazette through social media".

"I don't know why".

He said that people were still hiding under their desks when the gunman stopped shooting.

"I'm in no position to speak, just know @capgaznews reporters & editors give all they have every day".

"I can tell you this: We are putting out a damn paper tomorrow", he tweeted.
