NHS to be given £20 billion funding boost

The controversial Vote Leave battle bus saying the country would have an extra £350m for the NHS per week if we left the EU

Where will the money come from?

Tory chair of the Commons Health Committee Sarah Wollaston branded talk of a Brexit bonanza "tosh", while shadow chancellor John McDonnell said the Government's plans were "just not credible" without details of how they would be funded.

The Prime Minister has also said that "across the nation taxpayers will have to contribute a bit more in a fair and balanced way to support the NHS we all use".

The prime minister said the NHS will receive an additional 384 million pounds ($510 million) per week once Britain leaves the European Union next March.

Both are considered essential to the sustainability of the NHS, but the increase announced only applied to front-line NHS services such as hospitals, Global Positioning System and mental health care.

What kind of cash injection is the NHS getting?

Her promise follows years of financial struggle and the need to meet performance targets in areas such as A&E and cancer waiting times, and achieve standards mental health and primary care.

After the worst winter on record for the NHS, the much-loved institution is in dire need of fresh funds but a decade of severe spending restraint means the extra cash will nearly certainly have to be generated by increasing taxes, something the Conservatives have traditionally been reluctant to do, though opposition to the idea appears to be softening.

Mrs May also defied critics of her claim that leaving the European Union could help fund the 3.4% increase NHS by insisting that some of the money will come from a "Brexit dividend".

Russia thrash Egypt 3-1
By the time he did net a penalty, Russian Federation were 3-0 in front and Egypt were searching for nothing more than consolation. Third-ranked Belgium meanwhile beat World Cup newbies Panama 3-0, with Romelu Lukaku bagging a second-half brace in Sochi.

Poland take on Senegal at Spartak Stadium
Senegal took the lead when Mbaye Niang went around Lukasz Piszczek on the flank following a restart and centred to Sadio Mané. Poland have now gone six successive World Cups without scoring in their opening match and last won one in 1974.

But it was also a reminder to Egypt that the World Cup can be an unforgiving tournament. Egypt are still waiting for their first win at a World Cup finals (D2, L3).

He long ago recognised the power that Brexit and its spurious dividend could have in securing support for a deal among his cabinet colleagues, and NHS chief executive Simon Stevens was a willing ally, raising the spectre of the £350m battle bus in his lobbying for a budget bail-out past year.

The government has yet to confirm a plan for finding up to £11bn of the money promised yesterday, with the PM telling Swarbrick that tax rises are on the way in the autumn budget.

She attacked the Cameron government's key health reform - driven through by the former Health Secretary, Lord Lansley - which created clinical commissioning groups to negotiate legal contracts with other parts of the NHS.

"Today's announcement on funding is nowhere near good enough and the Prime Minister has confirmed there is no new money for social care".

Finally, Hammond also has the option of leaving taxes as they are and increasing borrowing instead. But it's right that we must recognise the impact social care has on the NHS, and the way in which these work together.

During a set-piece speech at the Royal Free Hospital in north London on Monday, May said there would be an extra £394m-a-week going to the NHS in England in 2023/24 - far exceeding the £350m famously plastered on the side of the Vote Leave bus.

"I'll be making sure we keep the pressure on the SNP to deliver for Scotland and deliver for our NHS".

On who would be hit by more tax rises, Mrs May pledged she would "listen to views about how we do this". "We want to see this long-term plan for the NHS delivering for the NHS".
