North Korea Has Broad but Optimistic Reaction to Kim-Trump Summit

Lee Hye-ji a 31-year-old South Korean housewife says she is 'hopeful' about the historic summit

He also expressed a desire to remove all 28,500 American troops stationed in South Korea, a pillar of United States engagement in Asia since the Korean War ended in 1953.

The remarks were made by foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang at a briefing in Beijing after Foreign Minister Wang Yi praised the summit - the first between a North Korean leader and a sitting U.S. president - as "creating a new history".

Kim Yong Chol's center-stage presence before and during the recent thaw between the two Koreas and Pyongyang and Washington indicate he is one of the most powerful, closest aides of the young leader.

Michael Green, Asia expert at the Washington DC-based Centre for Strategic and International Studies, said Mr Trump's announcement was "breathtaking" and blindsided Japan and South Korea.

"You've been tweeting a lot over the past 24 hours, and some have looked at your tweets as not only a criticism of Kim Jong Un, but some have seen them as a criticism as the president", host Sandra Smith said.

The Chinese position echoes comments made by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, who called for a lifting of sanctions during a May visit to Pyongyang, North Korea's capital.

"The United States and the DPRK commit to recovering POW/MIA remains, including the immediate repatriation of those already identified", says the statement released after Trump's summit with the North Korean leader. "The lethal envelope of advanced air-defense systems continues to grow against our 4th Generation aircraft", General Mark Welsh, the former chief of staff for the U.S. Air Force, said in a statement.

"This U.S. -North talk was a meeting between the leaders of two countries, so the agreement only contains theoretical points", he said. -North working-level talks from now on.

If anything, shipping saw some small benefit from the moves to isolate North Korea economically.

Kim was also quoted as saying it is "urgent" that both the North and USA "make a bold decision on halting irritating and hostile military actions against each other", while mentioning Trump's pledge to halt US war games with the South.

Tuesday Primary to decide Senate, congressional candidates
Trump has appeared with Heitkamp, and she was the only Democrat invited to the White House for the signing of the banking law. State Senator and attorney Jennifer Wexton-the only candidate who has held office-said she'll be able to get the votes.

Trump says that "500 days ago they would have "begged" for this deal-looked like war would break out".

Michael Mazarr, a senior political scientist at the RAND Corporation in Virginia, also noted that Tuesday's agreement was "far less detailed" than "a whole series of denuclearization agreements that they had signed over the years".

The move could diminish the USA military's ability to "fight tonight", a term American commanders have used for years to describe the heightened posture of US forces in one of the world's most-sensitive military flashpoints. But simultaneously, Seoul is aiming to prepare its defenses in case the US decides to halt joint military exercises indefinitely or pull out the around 28,000 troops it has stationed inside South Korea's borders.

"In order for [suspending exercises] to make sense, that process needs to start generating North Korean responses very quickly-in a matter of weeks at most".

"We would like to seek an understanding of this between Japan, the USA and South Korea", Onodera was quoted as saying. "In the micro sense, it's about the families whose loved ones fought and died and have remained in North Korea".

Trump was also asked about whether North Korea's human rights record came up at the summit, and he told ABC News that the issue was discussed "briefly" and then "at length". Bilateral trade has plunged in recent months as China ratcheted up enforcement of the increasingly tough restrictions ordered over the North's missile and nuclear weapons tests.

"We believe that this is the only correct direction for resolving the peninsula issue. I hope it will be eventually".

It quoted Kim directly as saying if the US takes "genuine measures for building trust", he would take "additional goodwill measures of next stage commensurate with them".

"I don't think that's wise", said Sen.

"Kim Jong-un is desperate", said Hong. "In that sense, it might have been better if the summit was not held at all". Written in English by Joshua Lipes.
