Frank McKenna Says Trump's Treatment of Trudeau Is 'Appalling'

Trump unleashed a Twitter harangue about Trudeau after departing the G7 summit in Quebec on Saturday, miffed that the Canadian prime minister had reiterated during a closing news conference that Canada intends to impose counter-tariffs on some American goods in retaliation for "insulting" tariffs imposed by Trump against Canadian steel and aluminum imports - which the president has justified on national security grounds.

Navarro told "Fox News Sunday": "There is a special place in hell for any for leader that engages in bad faith diplomacy with President Donald J. Trump and then tries to stab him in the back on the way out the door and that's what bad-faith Justin Trudeau did with that stunt press conference, that's what weak dishonest Justin Trudeau did".

Last month, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his government would retaliate against Trump's tariffs by imposing import taxes on $12.8 billion worth of USA imports in what Canada says its strongest trade action since the World War II.

Larry Kudlow, a former CNBC commentator who is now Trump's top economic adviser, said Trudeau had engaged in "betrayal" of the U.S.

The prime minister's silence on Monday came in sharp contrast to a roar of disapproval among Canadian politicians, who banded together across party lines to denounce Trump's attack and praise the bilateral and trading relationship between the two neighbours.

Kudlow said allies should understand that Trump "will do what is necessary to protect the US, its businesses and its workforce", adding that Trump "has always said, and I agree, tariffs are a tool in that effort".

In the past, Sanford said the president should " just shut up " and "quit responding" to critics and focus on the issues at hand. Newsweek reached out to both Mark Sanford and Katie Arrington's campaign team for comment but has not received a response.

But Trudeau still said a few things that didn't go down well inside Air Force One.

Mrs May said she made clear to Mr Trump that the U.S. levies were unacceptable - but she underlined the need for dialogue to stop the dispute from escalating. The French presidency had earlier condemned "fits of anger".

Trudeau kept silence after the personal attacks. Thomas Wright, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, told reporters that for Trump's first 500 days, "these countries generally were bent over backwards not to criticize President Trump".

But Trump had already said he would not hesitate to shut countries out of the United States market if they retaliate against his tariffs. "We strive to reduce tariff barriers, non-tariff barriers and subsidies", it said, reflecting the typical language of decades of G7 statements. "The European Union is brutal to the United States".

European officials said Trump had tried to water down the language in the draft communique on the WTO and rules-based trade.

While trade is expected to dominate, Trudeau also wants to focus on gender equality and climate change.
