Your internet use could change as 'net neutrality' ends

Net neutrality ends this Monday June 11th motion to keep it alive could die in the House

Some consumers fear a slower Internet and higher costs for broadband delivery. "I would love to have one uniform, robust federal standard protecting net neutrality, but given that the FCC has left a void, the states have to fill it".

The battle isn't entirely over, though. And rightly so. The gutting of net neutrality is a symbol of our broken democracy.

Some Congressional Democrats are seeking a repeal of their own, the overturning of the 2017 order that ends the 2015 rules. He has argued that the regulations are too restrictive on businesses and discourage them from investing in network upgrades that could make your Internet service faster and better.

Most now have service terms that specify they won't give preferential treatment to certain websites and services, including their own.

For anyone who hasn't been following, net neutrality is the concept of treating all internet traffic the same, no matter where it originates from.

"The internet should be an open platform where you are free to go where you want, and say and do what you want, without having to ask anyone's permission", Pai said.

In recent weeks, Samsung has announced several midrange smartphones that we don't know if they will ever be released in the US. Samsung also says the phone includes a "large battery", allowing for all-day battery life on a single charge.

The Republican-led Federal Communications Commission voted along party lines in December to repeal the rules, which were meant to prevent internet providers from blocking, speeding up, or slowing down access to specific online services.

"We're all going to wake up on Monday, and we're all going to be able to stream cool shows off Netflix or Hulu or YouTube", pledged Jonathan Spalter, the leader of USTelecom, a trade group for the telecom industry.

Rival services like Sling TV and Netflix count video against data caps, essentially making them more expensive to watch.

There are a few states that are battling the repeal of net neutrality within their own governments, both NY and Washington have already passed legislation that stops or discourages internet providers from favoring content. California is now in the process of passing a similar law, which will give users stricter protections that those under the Obama Era net neutrality rules.

Current FCC chairman Ajit Pai spearheaded the effort to return the internet to the way it was before the rules took effect, and despite the overwhelming support for keeping the rules intact, the FCC voted 3-2 to reverse course. Many Internet providers, such as AT&T and Verizon, have said they do not and will not block or slow content. Comcast has also said it does not block or slow content and has no plans to offer paid prioritization. "We were hopeful that that type of the light regulatory approach we're taking will lead to. better, faster, cheaper Internet access for consumers and more competition particularly". He has spent more than eight years covering the ways that tech companies like Apple, Facebook and Google navigate the corridors of government - and the regulations that sometimes result. Under Pai's model, the FCC has been gutted of most of its authority over broadband providers, ceding any remaining authority to an FTC legal experts repeatedly say lacks the ability to actually take any meaningful action. But if they start filing lawsuits, we'll know they're full of shit. In Montana and NY, governors signed executive orders that uphold the Obama-era net neutrality regulations.
