'Please review your posts': Facebook accidentally shares 14M users' private info

Facebook has another apology for you

Facebook said that while it was able to stop the bug on May 22, it couldn't switch all of the posts to private until May 28. This means any posts that they made could be read by anyone regardless of their default setting.

Facebook said it estimates 14 million people did so - and so has started notifying users. This time it was caused by an internal bug that set 14 million Facebook user's posts to be posted publicly. Facebook just admitted that the posts of as many as 14 million users who thought they were posting contents visible to only their friends, may have actually been shared publicly.

Facebook has another privacy screw-up on its hands. We have fixed this issue and starting today we are letting everyone affected know and asking them to review any posts they made during that time.

"We'd like to apologize for this mistake", Erin Egan, Facebook's chief privacy officer, said in a statement seen by Recode. People could have changed the individual audience setting on posts, but would have had to notice the setting was different from what they'd chosen.

First lady to attend Trump’s hurricane briefing Wednesday
Concern has been growing for US President Donald Trump's wife as her absence from public appearances became very noticeable. Her last appearance in an official capacity was on May 10, welcoming back three Americans imprisoned by North Korea.

This week, The Washington Post reported that Facebook shared special user data with Huawei - a Chinese firm that lawmakers say poses a national security threat.

The mistake happened, that company said, when it was building a new way for people to share "featured items" on their profiles. The notifications about the bug leads to a page of info about the issue, with a link to review affected posts.

Considering that Facebook has almost 2.2 billion users worldwide, the number of affected users is small. In the meantime, it has reverted the audience for any affected posts to whatever setting the user had selected previously. Typically, the social network assigns new posts the same privacy setting as the user's most recent post, unless otherwise instructed. That way, users can reset a post that was inadvertently set to public back to being shared just with friends if they would like.
