Who is Olga Tokarczuk - Man Booker Prize 2018 victor?

Olga Tokarczuk

The judging panel led by writer Lisa Appignanesi called Flights a witty, playful novel in which "the contemporary condition of perpetual movement" meets the certainty of death.

The entries for this year's award received 108 submissions and Tokarczuk's work was contending against two previous winners - South Korea's Han Kang and Hungary's Laszlo Krasznahorkai. Since 2016, it has rewarded an English-language translation of a single work of global literature.

The Man Booker International prize delivers a reliable increase in sales for the winning book.

Poland's deputy culture minister says he is happy that Polish author Olga Tokarczuk is the first Pole to win the prestigious Man Booker International Prize for fiction. The "Books of Jacob" published in 2014 earned her another Nike Award.

Tokarczuk's liberal views and perspectives on Polish history - especially on the Holocaust, including her criticism of Polish anti-Semitism - have clashed with those of the ruling conservative party. Since then, her bestselling books have been translated into more than 25 languages. Han's The Vegetarian, which won in 2016, sparked a 400% increase in sales of Korean literature in the United Kingdom, while A Horse Walks Into a Bar, the 2017 victor by Israel's David Grossman, saw its sales increase by 1,367% in the week following the award, with the publisher Penguin going through 10 reprints in a year. The novel, translated by Jennifer Croft, interweaves narratives of travel with explorations of the human body.

She was shortlisted for her meditative novel "The White Book" and had earned the honor in 2016 for "The Vegetarian".
