Donald Trump: June 12 meeting with Kim Jong-un could still happen

China's President Xi Jinping told US President Donald Trump that he supports the planned meeting between the US and North Korean leaders according to Chinese state broadcaster CCTV

Trump attributed this to the changing behaviour of Kim and North Korea.

Michelle Kosinski, CNN's senior diplomatic correspondent covering the State Department. The US President has publicly said several times now that the summit may or may not happen and he is fine with it either way, leaving it to North Korea to play ball. "I know the president is (optimistic) as well", he said.

One of the most quotable takes on the summit cancellation letter Donald Trump wrote to North Korea's Kim Jong Un came from Wendy Sherman, the lead United States negotiator for the Iran nuclear accord - an agreement from which the Trump administration recently withdrew.

'He is not taking the guy's shit, ' boasted the Trump friend, who speaks with the president frequently.

South Korea may lose much of its voice if Trump chooses to deal more directly with Kim or seeks a broader resolution including China, North Korea's only major ally.

But roadblocks had begun popping up as demonstrated by the U.S. team being stood up in Singapore at a meeting arranged by the secretary of state Mike Pompeo, the senior-most American official to have been in direct contact with the North Korean leader with two face-to-face meetings, once as Central Intelligence Agency director and then as the top USA diplomat.

Following Trump's letter to Kim on Thursday suggesting to hold the meeting would have been "inappropriate", House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., blasted the president, suggesting Kim had "won".

"'Nothing we heard today has changed our view that there is no evidence to support any allegation that the Federal Bureau of Investigation or any intelligence agency placed a spy in the Trump campaign or otherwise failed to follow appropriate procedures and protocols, ' Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) told reporters".

In a separate statement at the White House, Mr Trump said the step was a "tremendous setback for North Korea and the world", adding the United States military was "ready if necessary" to respond to any "reckless" act from North Korea. We are talking to them now.

Erdogan hits Turkey currency storm month before polls
The bank's move came after the USA dollar/Turkish lira exchange rate hit a historic high on Wednesday, climbing to around 4.93. Following the bank's decision, the dollar/lira rate fell steeply to below 4.60.

President Trump on Friday welcomed North Korea's statement that it was still willing to meet despite his cancellation of the summit. "In fact, he has demonstrated an enormous capacity to lead his country and his team", Pompeo said soon after President Trump cancelled his meeting with Kim. The group had erected cardboard cutouts celebrating Moon and Kim's recent meeting at the DMZ.

Politically, Mr Trump had invested heavily in the success of the planned summit.

Still, Mr Trump's announcement appeared to surprise South Korea, which had pushed to keep the summit on track as recently as Tuesday, when President Moon Jae-in met with Mr Trump in the Oval Office and said the "fate and the future" of the Korean Peninsula hinged on the talks. He also said "our country has regained the respect that we used to have long ago", declaring, "America is back".

Choe Son-hui had said the suggestions from US Vice-President Mike Pence that North Korea "may end like Libya" was "stupid". Libya's leader Muammar Gaddafi was executed following a Nato-backed uprising less than eight years after surrendering his nascent weapons program.

"They simply stood us up", one White House official said, according to the Washington Post.

Nevertheless, the door for talks between the US and North Korea remains open. In a statement earlier Thursday, South Korea's National Security Council called the closing the North's "first measure toward complete denuclearisation".

Park Jung Eun, Secretary General for People's Solidarity for Participatory Democracy, a civil society organization that advocates for democracy, also condemned Trump's move.

He was apparently responding to statements from a senior North Korean diplomat attacking his administration and casting doubt over the meeting.

"That doesn't give me a lot of confidence that we've made progress with the North Koreans on the substance of the negotiations", she said.
