Homeland Security Denies Report That Secretary Drafted Resignation Letter

Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen testifies before Senate Appropriations subcommittee hearing on Capitol Hill in Washington

After a reportedly being berated before the cabinet by President Donald Trump, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen nearly resigned Wednesday, according to The New York Times.

Two sources familiar with the blow-up claim Nielsen had written a letter of resignation.

She was reportedly upset after a cabinet meeting Wednesday in which President Donald Trump allegedly "berated her" for not doing enough to secure the country's borders.

But Mexico refused to pay for the wall, and despite Trump's efforts to limit undocumented immigration, the rate of attempted border crossings may have risen - estimates show that in April, US Border Patrol agents apprehended almost 40,000 people in March, or a 200% increase from 2017.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders was asked about the incident in Thursday's press briefing.

Nielsen also released her own statement, saying Trump was "rightly frustrated" about border security and that she shared his frustration.

Nielsen was nominated as Homeland Security secretary in December, after former secretary John Kelly was selected to become Trump's chief of staff. "Border security is the most basic and necessary responsibility of a sovereign nation".

This has not been the first time Trump has berated his cabinet officials.

During a rally in Elkhart, Indiana, Thursday evening, Trump complained, "We have the worst immigration laws in the history of mankind". It was only a portion of a larger tirade in which he chided the cabinet for what he felt was an unsatisfactory level of progress in stopping illegal immigration and ensuring border security.

Trump has growing increasingly angry about his inability to secure the border and has repeatedly called on Congress to pass new legislation to strengthen what he calls the nation's "horrible" immigration laws. But this year, they have risen again.

"All these are complicated matters and I will keep on to guide the Department to accomplish everything that we are able to in order to implement the President's security-focused schedule", she added, without saying anything regarding resignation programs. A recent target of the president has been a migrant caravan traveling from South America to the US border.

Trump considers Nielsen as well as different DHS officers ' are resisting directives that parents are separated from their children when people cross illegally in the united states of america, to discourage them from entering, the newspaper stated, citing the officers.
