Video Shows Tesla Autopilot Saving A Driver From a Crash

A man in the driver seat of a Tesla, who switched the vehicle to autopilot and moved over to his passenger seat, has been banned from driving for 18 months.

Nottingham-based Patel last week pleaded guilty in the St Albans Crown Court to unsafe driving over the incident that was recorded on the motorway near Hemel Hempstead, in Hertfordshire, at around 7.40pm on May 21 past year.

Patel agreed he had been "silly" but did say the vehicle was "amazing" and that he was just the "unlucky one who got caught", implying other drivers do this as well.

After an investigation Patel ended up pleading guilty to risky driving, and has been given a pretty hefty punishment including 100 hours of unpaid work, £1,800 fine, and an 18 month driving ban.

The footage was posted on social media before it was reported to the police.

Patel was then interviewed at Stevenage Police Station, at which time he admitted to what he did saying it was "silly". A passerby in another auto caught the incident in a brief video, though Patel can't be seen clearly.

A United Kingdom driver was banned from all driving for 18 months after pulling a insane stunt with his Tesla's autopilot that has to be seen to be believed.

A Tesla Model X driver owes his life to the company's Autopilot driver assist system, which detected the danger and veered the vehicle to safety.

Patel said he was the "unlucky one who got caught", the court was told.

A Tesla engineer told police that the car's autopilot features are meant to be used by a "fully-attentive driver", and that drivers should "never depend on [Traffic-Aware Cruise Control] to adequately slow down model S".

Investigating officer PC Kirk Caldicutt, from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Road Policing Unit, said: "What Patel did was grossly irresponsible and could have easily ended in tragedy". A court revoked is driver's license for 18 months. In the dashcam video, you can see the driver sitting in the driver's seat but not fully paying attention moments before the accident. However, the discussions need to be had as more injuries and even deaths related to autopilot vs human responsibility continue.
