Boehner Joins Advisory Board For Marijuana Company

Erik Altieri, executive director for the Washington-based marijuana advocacy group NORML, told The Washington Post that Boehner's acceptance of marijuana tracks with rising American and even Republican lawmaker evolving beliefs about the drug and its uses.

Boehner said in a statement his position "has evolved" from opposing to supporting legalization of marijuana.

Boehner is joined on the board of advisers by former MA governor Bill Weld, a Republican who left office in 1997 and was former New Mexico governor Gary Johnson's running mate in 2016 on the libertarian party ticket.

He has been appointed to the board of advisers of Acreage Holdings, which operates in 11 states, Boehner said in a statement.

As for marijuana's potential role in reducing opioid abuse, a study published April 2017 in the journal Drug and Alcohol Dependence found in states with legal weed hospital visits for complications from prescription painkillers are dropping.

The move reflects a shift in Boehner's sentiments about marijuana from when he was in Congress.

On the same day it became clear that Paul Ryan won't run for reelection, former House Speaker John Boehner is showing the man who replaced him in 2015 that there is life after leadership. The following year he joined the board of Reynolds American, the second-largest tobacco company in the U.S.

The duo also castigated federal prohibitions on marijuana that left states like Colorado, Maine, Ohio, and Florida, which implemented their own laws governing the drug, in limbo.

"It is hard to overstate the impact of this monumental event for the United States cannabis sector", Vahan Ajamian, a cannabis-industry analyst at Beacon Securities, said in a note.

"Cannabis could be perceived as an exit drug, not a gateway drug", he said.

The willingness of conservative politicians to advocate for cannabis shows just how far the conversation around marijuana has shifted in the USA over the past few years. While marijuana is illegal at the federal level, most states have legalized pot in some form. We look forward to his voice joining the growing chorus calling for an end to cannabis criminalization. "Anything that expedites the ability for patients to access this safe and reliable treatment alternative, and that facilitates an end to the practice of arresting otherwise law-abiding citizens for the possession of a plant should be welcomed with open arms".
