Trump cancels trip to South America to oversee 'response to Syria'

Major activity was reported at Britain's Tornado base in Cyprus.

He highlighted what he said was the power of the United States to stop atrocities like the attack Saturday in rebel-held eastern Ghouta that killed at least 40 people.

The White House sharply rejected any suggestion that Trump's own words about pulling USA troops out of Syria had opened the door for the attack, which killed more than 40 people, including children.

As worldwide officials worked to try to confirm the chemical attack which happened in the town of Douma, Trump took the rare step of directly criticizing Russian President Vladimir Putin in connection with the incident.

"The team is preparing to deploy to Syria shortly", it said in a statement.

After the Syrian regime used sarin nerve agent during an attack in Khan Sheikhoun in April past year, Mr Trump launched retaliatory missile strikes against a Syrian government airbase.

The White House declined to clarify what consequences Trump had in mind.

The New York Times: Trump To Decide Soon Whether To Retaliate For "Barbaric Act" In Syria - "President Trump on Monday denounced the suspected chemical weapons attack that killed dozens of people in Syria over the weekend as a 'barbaric act, ' and said he will make a decision in the next 24 to 48 hours about whether to retaliate militarily as he did to a similar assault previous year".

President Bashar al Assad's regime in Syria, which is backed by Russian Federation, has denied being responsible for the attack.

Moscow has called the allegations of a chemical attack in Douma "fabrications". The opposition's Syrian Civil Defense rescue organization said the victims appeared to have suffocated.

Washington's main European allies stood by reports blaming Assad.

The government agreed to halt its assault after three days of indiscriminate air and ground attacks. The use of chemicals was a desperate move to force the militants to concede after talks had broken down, she said.

"People now are going out in the streets looking for their loved ones in the rubble", Bakkar said.

A bus with Syrian rebels and their families aboard leaves Wafideen camp in Douma, Syria, April 9, 2018.

Human rights groups and United Nations officials say the tactic amounts to forced displacement, a war crime. The resolution was likely to be blocked by Russian Federation, which will put two draft resolutions on Syria of its own to a vote because it does not agree with the US text, diplomats said. Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani said he and Trump "see eye to eye" on Syria.

Top U.S. military chiefs reportedly advised the president that their forces need to remain in Syria to prevent an ISIS resurgence.

Bakkar said several bombs laced with chemicals landed in Douma Saturday night.

Graphic footage shot by rescuers and activists show victims of the attack - including children - dead and injured, some ghostly white and foaming at the mouth in makeshift clinics. One patient, a woman, had convulsions and pinpoint pupils, suggesting exposure to a nerve agent, the statement said.

The Syrian air base was struck by missiles a little more than 24 hours after the chemical attack. He said they were allowed to take place because of the "world's indifference".

This hour, On Point: Chaos in Syria-understanding U.S. options. Ali Akbar Velayati, an aide to Iran's supreme leader, spoke upon arrival in the Syrian capital on Tuesday. It said the claims were "fabrications" by the Army of Islam and a "failed attempt" to impede government advances.

Assigning responsibility was the domain of investigators from the Joint Investigative Mechanism between the United Nations and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, which was dissolved after Russian Federation vetoed a renewal of its mandate in November. Douma was the only town left holding out. Earlier, various official Russian agencies repeatedly warned that preparations had been underway in different parts of Syria for provocations and simulations of chemical attacks that would be blamed on government forces.

The attack comes about a week after Trump told military leaders to draw up plans to prepare a withdrawal of the remaining USA troops from Syria.

In Moscow, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Tuesday the Kremlin would submit a resolution to the United Nations Security Council proposing that inspectors from the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) investigate the alleged attack in Douma.
