United Kingdom pensioner arrested for murder after burglar stabbed to death

Richard Osborn-Brooks, the 78-year-old man who was arrested over the fatal stabbing of an intruder during a burglary at his south-east London home, has been bailed until May pending further enquiries, Scotland Yard has said.

Henry Vincent, 37, from Kent, was stabbed during a break-in at the home of pensioner, Richard Osborn-Brooks, 78, in Hither Green on Wednesday.

Police said the armed suspect, a 38-year-old man, forced the homeowner into his kitchen while the other suspect went upstairs.

Two men entered the property in Further Green Road in Hither Green, south-east London, early on Wednesday morning.

'There is a scuffle and the old man has slight injuries but managed to stab one of the burglars and he shortly died.

The second burglar, who police say was also armed, fled in a van, leaving his accomplice for dead after trying unsuccessfully to bundle him into the getaway vehicle. "I did some building work on his house a while ago, but I haven't seen him for about three weeks", they said.

Neighbours and supporters have defended the pensioner, saying he should not be punished for protecting himself.

Another local resident said he "wasn't surprised" to hear about the burglary. "I saw the body laid in the street and another guy jump in a van and leave", Gordon Williams, a neighbor, said.

"The man on the ground was wearing a blue T-shirt and it was pulled up".

The pensioner, who suffered bruising to his arms, was initially arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm but was further arrested on suspicion of murder, the Met said. His pupils were completely dilated.

A large purple forensic tent was erected by the front door.

The dead suspect's next of kin have been informed and a formal identification is due to take place.

Following the struggle, Vincent was taken to hospital and died of a stab wound, a post-mortem examination found.
